Should Twenty20 be Part of Olympics?

Kumar Sangakkara, Sourav Ganguly and Stephen Fleming, Steve Waugh, Adam Gilchirst … all the big guns think it shud be part of Olympics …

Will it help in Promoting cricket further World Wide?

Re: Should Twenty20 be Part of Olympics?

ya why not!

Re: Should Twenty20 be Part of Olympics?

If soccer is in the Olympics, I don't see why cricket shouldn't be in either. Although the fact that they're kicking baseball out wouldn't help this.

Well sure, what else is new in cricket? Twenty/20 is inserted in almost every series now. IPL’s second season alongwith ECB’s Stanford deal next year are on the horizon already. If introducing this version of cricket in the expatriate market - US/China - will help realize and promote further test cricket in these markets (which I frankly don’t see happening as a result of it), by all means, let Twenty/20 be a part of the Olympics in a bid that it will improve test cricket.

“I believe that in time the success of cricket at the Olympic Games will lead to more Test-playing nations, something that the sport will need in the coming century.” (Gilchrist on CricInfo)

How does this statement even relate to the promotion of test cricket? More countries does not mean better competition. If the likes of USA and China start playing test cricket, that would still leave a big gap for them to reach up to the levels of regular test-playing countries.

Well ofcourse, wont happen in a fortnight, Gilchrist is talking about the coming century. 20/20 in the olympics is a great way to globalize the sport further and secure its place on the world market like soccer. It will excite the masses in parts of the world where cricket is not popular (yet!) and with time, as interest builds up, maybe in 20 years we can get other countries looking at test cricket seriously (wont happen in the US tho). And then - China’s plan (and other new nations to test cricket) to defeat India in a test match in a 100 years can become a reality.

b/w Gilchrist wants to have T20 in 2020 Olypics

Re: Should Twenty20 be Part of Olympics?

O.k but finally U.S,RUSSIA,FRANCE,CHINA should not be toppers......... :D, like happened in Hockey.... :(

Yes why not and why wait till 2020 Olympics as per Adam Gilchrist? Why not have it as a fixture in London in 2012.

20 years later after the fact is what I meant.

I believe a game must be approved 8 years in advance. Not 100%, but its too late to submit for 2012.

Re: Should Twenty20 be Part of Olympics?

@asif … thts wat i was thinking … :hmmm:
y did gillo went for 2020 olympics ??
cuz of 20-20 in 2020 ??

Re: Should Twenty20 be Part of Olympics?

After Watson … Pakistani players (Malik and Younis Khan) also supported Gilchrist’s Idea

I agree with everything you have written. Who wants to play a test match at the Olympics. You stated it would build up the interest but also it would create a big, huge gap between new nations and regular test-playing nations. Which, in time, I suppose would not matter much, as the competition between the Associates will be tough and they will get to play featured matches with regular test-playing nations too.

Re: Should Twenty20 be Part of Olympics?

Who gives a rat's rear about the Olympics. Isn't that faracas staged every four years to showcase the sisiness of the tightly clad 15 year olds doing hoops over parallel bars? I don't care about the O. I would rather watch a test match of the Ashes than 3 weeks of crap any time. No, cricket should not be tainted with this crap.

Re: Should Twenty20 be Part of Olympics?

And those who say "globalize cricket" think again. I want to keep this game as elite as possible. Only 10 selected countries can play at the highest level. I would jump off the cliff when Chinca plays test cricket. They are everywhere.

Me too. It's a great idea.
