I think that they should try to become part of the EU, as it would be beneficial to have a Muslim country in the club. The problem is that how far is Turkey willing to go to change its Islamic identity?
For the Europeans, it seems that having a Muslim country in the EU is just not acceptable.
^ You are calling Turkey a Muslim country? Most of it's population are Muslims, but the Turkish constitution is strictly laicistic.
And btw, by joining the EU Turkey would not really be a representative of the Islamic world. It would break up with it.

They make very little chance anyway to be accepted by all countries for entry to the EU!

Even though they have a secular constitution, but the people are 99% Muslim. There has also been a Islamic rsurgence in recent years in Turkey.
I hate to admit but our (Pakistan) condition is kind of hypocretic as we claim to be the Islamic Republic but do not have the much needed true Islamic system in our country. (in courts etc.)
If you talk to a Turk, most of them are dying to enter EU. May Allah guide them! True progress cannot come with entering Unions, but it is the country itself that does something and that too only with the will of Allah.
If the people of Turkey want to be part of the EU, so be it. Surely their economy will benefit by joining the EU. As for being Muslim, surely there are muslims in Turkey, the same muslims that have created a Turkish Playboy channel/magazine. They consider themself european as it is, why not let them join the parade. (Part of turkey is in europe).
If Pakistan had the oppurtunity to join a union of such power , we would be praying day and night for our entry.

What I meant is:
There are two main political groups in Turkey with almost equal strength.
One that is very secular and wants to keep the influence of the Islamic countries East of Turkey as low as possible. That is the group, which is strongly supporting the campaign to bring Turkey into the EU. Because many high-ranked army officers belong to this group, the Turkish army is generally seen as Pro-EU.
The second group is more on the religious side and wants to stengthen Islamic values among the Turkish public. They are striving for cooperation with Islamic countries, rather than the EU. This group is not really bothered whether Turkey joins the EU, however they would prefer improved relations with the countries in the East.
So if Turkey does ever join the EU, which I think is highly unlikely in the next 20 years, it would be seen as a political victory of the first group, because they are the main drivers of that campaign.
The decision lies with Turkey and its people. If it benefits them, then sure Turkey should go for it.
On the other hand, I believe the EU is a chritian organization. It was created to benefit the christian nations of Europe. I don't care about their propaganda that they are a secular European organization. Their actions so far and speeches by their leaders clearly support my view point. They will never allow any Muslim majority country to become a part of it. Turkey can try, but I think it is a futile attempt.
I think the AK party's almost 2/3 majority in the Grand National Assembly is very decieving since they recieved 35% of the popular vote. It is due to Turkey's complex electoral procedures.
I think EU benefits more if Turkey becomes under the EU umbrella. This will give EU a say in shaping the foreign policy of Turkey which is a major Islamic country. If I was in the EU I would want to have Turkey.
