Should the Tax Payer Cover This Surgery?

Do you feel its okay for your pounds to be spent on sexual discretions?

Increasing numbers of women are having taxpayer-funded ‘virginity repair’ operations before marriage.

There were 116 hymen replacement operations carried out on the NHS between 2005 and 2009. The total for 2009 was 30, up 25 per cent from 24 in 2005.

The health service figures, which do not include data on the religion or marital status of the individuals, seem to echo a trend reported by private clinics, which are seeing a huge surge in demand for the procedure from Muslim women paying up to £4,000.

One Harley Street clinic said that demand for its half-hour procedure had tripled in recent months.

Doctors say patients are under pressure from future husbands or relatives who insist that they should be virgins on their wedding night.

Critics, including moderate Muslim groups, have condemned the trend as a sign of the spread of Islamic fundamentalism in the West.

During the hymenoplasty procedure – viewed by some as invasive and degrading – the hymen is stitched or reconstructed so that it will tear again and bleed on the woman’s wedding night.

In some cases, the vaginal lining can be used to create a false hymen. A blood capsule can then be inserted into the lining to ensure realistic blood flow when the membrane is broken.

Consultant gynaecologist Dr Magdy Hend performs hymenoplasty under local anaesthetic at his Regency Clinic on Harley Street. He charges £1,850 for the half-hour procedure and says that most of his clients are Muslim women.

He said: ‘In the past, we would do one or two hymen reconstruction operations a week. Sometimes now, we get two or three women a day. Demand has tripled.

‘Our Muslim clients worry about having had sex, and their fiance and family knowing that they have been touched before.

‘It is more cultural rather than religious. If the bride is not a virgin and does not bleed on the wedding night, it is a big shame on the family. There have been honour killings in extreme cases.

Re: Should the Tax Payer Cover This Surgery?

Wow that is sad.

Re: Should the Tax Payer Cover This Surgery?

Sad to hear the increasing Muslim women and then sadder to hear they are hiding it further.

Well it was some tax payer(s) who took it away, so let them pay for damages.

Re: Should the Tax Payer Cover This Surgery?

Yeah but only those who took it away should pay and the majority should not foot the bill.

Re: Should the Tax Payer Cover This Surgery?

No, course taxpayers shouldn't pay..

The whole 'bleeding on the wedding night' stuff is BS anyway..

Re: Should the Tax Payer Cover This Surgery?

if it comes to victimised women then that's fine.......
but i guess most of these women probably commited zinaa due to their own free will and lack of self control, then i'd say tax payers shouldnt pay for their wrong-doings...

Re: Should the Tax Payer Cover This Surgery?

Marriage based on lies does not work and never will. Better to own up before than to regret later on (when husband finds out). Past always comes back to haunt you....so, in my opinon, it's always best if you tell your-would-be husband about your past, instead of someone else doing it for you.

And, No, taxpayers' should'nt be paying for such useless operations.

I feel really bad for those victimised women, rape victims etc. but if we support these hymen repair procedures we're kind of condoning that part of culture that says it's ok to check a new bride has bled on her wedding night and the ridiculousness of it all when we should be condemning it. If a girl has had sex and is worried about what her husband or his family might do if they find out she should not be marrying him in the first place, imo if she is being forced than the police should get involved.. Not being a virgin then having to 'cover it up' in the face of a stupid illogical backward custom does not make sense to me..

Re: Should the Tax Payer Cover This Surgery?

^nah am not in favor of those girls who’ve had sex of their own free will…am totally against it…

but those women who were victimised ie raped, they deserve a chance to move on..because we do have this culture in our society, abt a woman being a virgin and all…so that option should be available for them…having said that, it’s not right to marry someone who wouldnt accpet you the way you are…

and there’s this other issue tht having this option available, girls who do zinaa will take advantage of it:hmmm:
it’s got its pro’s and cons…this topic is quite complex:hmmm:

Re: Should the Tax Payer Cover This Surgery?

^ So true..

Re: Should the Tax Payer Cover This Surgery?

^wish things were a lot simpler in life:hinna:

Re: Should the Tax Payer Cover This Surgery?

where does it stop, how about tax payer services for substance abusers, why should I foot the bill for some bloke who became an addict?

what about services for people who got infected with HIV due to unsafe sex?

What about people refusing to foot the bill for treatment of kids born to couples where the spouses are blood relatives?..can we say well you took a risk knowingly and we are not going to foot the bill.

I understand the question fully, I am just confused as to what would be the limits of coverage and why

We already do that in the UK:

Me too..

We can add obese people and smokers to the list then....

Re: Should the Tax Payer Cover This Surgery?

^The tobacco companies and fast food chains should foot that bill.

I know, i was making the point that by the same argument we should not be paying for that either

true-

where does individual responsibility go in this scenario?
we can make society at large responsible by having tax payers cover this
or have manufacturers cover it
btw all obese people are not fastfood chain products, especially in desi community where fastfood is not a norm.

I agree if a product is bad inherently e.g. a cigarette then yes, make the manufacturer pay, but if its just some dude eating 3 dozen gulabjamun a day then what can u do?

Re: Should the Tax Payer Cover This Surgery?

i'd rather pay for these brand new hymens than bonuses for wall street execs..
