Re: Should prostitution be legalized

Let's just legalize cocaine while we're at it.

Pros and cons: More money for the individual, less for drug mafia (politicians), more crackheads.

Re: Should prostitution be legalized

Cons

There are some people who are discouraged by drugs and prostitutes being illegal. They don't involve themselves in these activities out of sheer respect/fear for law. Legalizing would eliminate the deterrent for these people.

Re: Should prostitution be legalized

Intoxicated people are prone to making bad decisions, however, in the West there is significant advocacy for avoiding drinking and driving, while in Pakistan people drink illegally, and then proceed to drive. The repercussions of getting caught are much worse, so people are more likely to try to hide it, and in the process harm themselves as well as others.

The idea is to legalize consumption but prosecute distributors. This allows governments to spend money treating victims of drug abuse instead of pouring millions prosecuting minor offenses. It also allows people who have fallen into that lifestyle a safe haven to try and change their lives. Portugal has recently legalized all drugs and, while years of data is needed to make a conclusive statement, the initial results are promising.

I wounder if legalization of prostitution would have a similar effect. People will engage in it regardless. I think it is the social stigma of soliciting prostitutes that is more effective at prohibiting people, not the legal repercussions.

Re: Should prostitution be legalized

Prostitution is legal in Turkey which is an Islamic country... brothels are called "Genelevs". I have seen them from outside while in Istanbul....Istanbul has lots of clubs offering Ukrainian / Russian dancing girls who actually go with customers. I was staying in a hotel with club and the club manager (well dressed man) asked me where I was from....I said Middle East and he started speaking ARABIC. I was pissed off. most of their clients come for sex holidays from Arab world....

Re: Should prostitution be legalized

I'm all for legalizing prostitution. We know these things are happening in every society out there so why put these issues under the bed. And no by legalizing it doesn't mean I support prostitution, but I support the fact that it helps out the girls that are not happy with this profession and were forced into it, or had no other way to put food on the table. It will definitely help them out, and people that really take this as their career will be in it regardless.

Re: Should prostitution be legalized

This has been a nice exchange of views. One thing I learner was the issue of exploitation in terms of import of women into countries where this is legalized. That was something I had not considered at all. The other thing that stood out was Arab folks going to Istanbul. Assuming some of these Arab folks belong yo leadership and are in favor of draconian laws to punish ordinary citizens who drink or visit prostitutes, this indicates that time for Change has come. And change will come when the silent majority speak up and exercise their rights. The time will come when the punishment for drinking is not x number of lashes ( or whatever the punishment is). It will come when patriotic citizens are allowed to criticize such laws without the vocal minority taking that as an insult to their country.

Thanks to everyone who participated. I hope this healthy discussion was informative.
