Pakistan Culture Minister Aftab Shah Jilani has said the government could block the release of Indian films http://kona.kontera.com/javascript/lib/imgs/grey_loader.giffor the upcoming Eid al-Fitr festival in order to encourage the struggling local industry.

Jilani said that any decision would be taken after further discussions within the government.

He said Pakistani film makers had complained that cinemas prefer to show Indian movies which were affecting the local industry.

Film distributors and cinema owners in the country are concerned after the federal minister announced the proposal.

They said that the government should take this risk on its own by hiring cinema houses as they cannot afford to lose millions of rupees in their peak earning days of the year.

“Eid is an occasion when people throng to cinemas and Pakistani movies didn’t have a track record of doing great business during the holidays,” Pakistan Film Exhibitors Association Chairman Zoraiz Lashari said.

“This proposal to block Indian films release on Eid is unfair,” he said.

“It seems as if the Honourable minister has looked at only those aspects which the film directors wanted him to look at. The cinemas in Sindh don’t screen Punjabi movies. If two of the four movies being released in Karachi are Punjabi what will they do,” he said.

Presently cinemas in cities like Karachi and Lahore rely on screening latest Indian and Hollywood releases including the cineplexes.

Currently there are 14 cinemas in Lahore and many of don’t even screen Punjabi movies.

Lashari said the cinema owners were ready to give show time to Pakistani movies but there should be no binding on Indian films release.

Nadeem Mandviwalla, a known film distributor and the owner of several cinema houses, said that the decision of banning the screening of Indian movies on Eid was not justified and should not be implemented at any cost.

However, United Film Association Chairman Amjad Farzand Ali applauded the announcement, adding that the domestic film industryhttp://kona.kontera.com/javascript/lib/imgs/grey_loader.gifwas more important than the business generated by Indian films.

“Cinemas show Indian movies throughout the year, why is it wrong if they screen our own films on Eid?”

Nahiiiiiiiiiiiii....Mujhe Dabang dekhni hai.

Re: Should Pakistan ban Indian movies for Eid?

We have nothing better to do then to block movies huh? STUPID!

People in our country are dying, getting raped, getting trained to kill, begging for a grain of rice and our ****ty govt wants to continue to ban harmless stuff like facebook and movies? What the f u ck is wrong with our govt

Please ban bollywood movies -- FOREVER -- an absolute clampdown, right from satellite to the video stores, to the theatres. No Pakistani should have any access to anything bollywood. Then gullotine Sangeeta, Syed Noor and the rest from the Lahore industry who have turned phenomenal trash for the last so many years. Then, give loans to the young and talented video directors, tell them to come out with 5 financially feasible productions else they will be gullotined TOO. Also, move the film industry out of Lahore. I guess its the only way Pakistani cinema will movie forward -- by brute force. Otherwise these people are too lazy and unmotivated to do anything.

Re: Should Pakistan ban Indian movies for Eid?

Ban anything that is Indian including indian movies, serials etc. The Pakistani youth is slowly getting Indianized. Some have even started speaking hindi.

Re: Should Pakistan ban Indian movies for Eid?

you guys are sooooo freaking silly! is bollywood that freakin important? we have other problems in our country that dont relate to stupid sh it like indian movies

if you dont like bollywood dont watch bollywood(like me)
dont force the rest of the country to follow in your footsteps.....

the govt should focus on poverty, prostitution, taliban, the floods, the water shortage, etc. before they even consider "banning" anything!

Re: Should Pakistan ban Indian movies for Eid?

^^ Please if you think showbiz is not important enough, then don't bother posting here because most of us in this section of gupshup really care for Pakistani entertainment and issues related to our showbiz are pretty significant for us

Re: Should Pakistan ban Indian movies for Eid?

showbiz is important but for the awam! for the people!
it should not have government interference at all!

Re: Should Pakistan ban Indian movies for Eid?

Pls give me a break.

Re: Should Pakistan ban Indian movies for Eid?

One needs nerves to tolerate bolly trash lol. Anyways, considering the excess of indian stuff on our channels, I would rather ban indian films forever not just for eid. There needs to be a balance. Our government should formulate a policy to ensure pakistani content is also getting the same level of exposure and benefits.

Re: Should Pakistan ban Indian movies for Eid?

no indian movies shouldnot be banned in pakistan for this eid or ever. they are a very good source of entertainment and i would love to see them being played in pakistani cinemas.

(btw there are already so many threads going on for the same topic...well)
