should military service be mandatory?

Should military service in Pakistan be mandatory?I think it should cause Pakistan doesn’t have a large standding army or reserve, and military service is actually a good thing because it teaches some really important skills that we don’t usually learn(it’s like boy scouts on steroids) there might be skeptics but I think it’s done a lot of good for Israel and South Korea.

Re: should military service be mandatory?

Firstly, Pakistan has the 7th largest standing army in the world... how can you claim that the country doesn't have a large standing army?

Secondly, having mandatory military service lowers the quality of the soldiers in the army. In an all-volunteer army every soldier wants to fight for his country (and religion). In an army with military service you have soldiers who are being forced to fight - they are less motivated and less effective.

Pakistan has always had far more people wanting to join the army than it has capacity to train. It is one of the few countries which has the luxy of being able to pick only its very best to join its military.

My father tried to join the army in 1971 during the middle of the civil war and rejected due to a temporary ear infection that would have cleared up in just 3 weeks. He was told to apply again the following year instead because there even were far too many perfectly healthy volunteers to recruit that year.
