Crikey OCP's as they are called are usually prescribed for different reasons other than the primary one being contraception . Irregular cycles is one of those reasons but it is advisable to take them only after a doctor's consultation to rule out other causes of irregular cycles.
There are different factors taken into account , including age , weight , history of thromboembolic disease , hypertension ,cancers etc before we prescribe OCP to a patient .

Yeah, I took it from about 16 as i wanted more 'manageable' periods, less heavy and painful..

Cricket, I think its great that you have a concern and want to know. Sure, guys should ask and find out. Its the future fertility of your wife at stake here and better to be informed than in the dark and always wondering.
Anyway, the pill regulates the cycles which aside from the resulting convenience of knowing when to expect the cycles, regulates the flow of hormones to where they should be. The pill also helps in many cases to resolve issues with polyp-cystic ovaries which definitely interferes with fertility. Then theres also the nice convenience of not having to use a condom with your wife which many feel interferes with pleasure.
The pill has been widely tested and used for half a century so its side effects are well known and documented. The newer methods - especially the ones that cause cycles to stop for months at a time - they're dangerous in my opinion. Its one thing to assist mother nature to get on track like with the pill but its quite another to fool with mother nature. When you take a birth control medication that stops your cycles and shuts down normal operations, theres no guarantee that things will restart when you want them to!

You know...that's what REALLY irks me. Like you said, its great to have them normal and manageable, but......why would any normal, sane woman, at ease with her feminity, want to eliminate her period altogether?
Women were meant to have periods, if you (generally) cannot handle them to the point that you want to have them only 3-4 times a year, then she has serious problems......

I agree with Sara periods are a part of womanhood, it makes you feminine I wouldn't want to eliminate them either and do question why a woman would feel compelled to do that

women bodies are designed very complicated. No offense in any way though. Infact, i respect women for going through the phase of period, and to tolerate the pain of it.. (heard its BAD!..).. you earn my respect for that.

Ive knowns loads of women who had to go on the pill due to irregularity of their periods.
One girl decided to take shots so she would only have her period 3 or 4 times a year...isnt that Depo?
I used to get fevers, vomiting, gut wrenching cramps, etc but it mellowed out over the years considerably. I was also prescribed the pill - only took it for a while because it made me hungry all the time!

Depo Provera doesnt usually stop cycles completely but it works for 3 months. Seasonique and seasonale are the ones that limit cycles to 3 or 4 per year. I'd recommend staying away from this type of birth control - depo caused my infertility and the drug companies arent very clear on this, they fluff it over like its no big deal and doesnt happen very often.
