should i hire a photographer or get a friend to shoot my wedding? a cautionary tale

courtesy of rock’n’roll bride… read on then let me know what y’all think-

the biggest, most obvious thing for me in her pictures- which, interestingly, she doesn’t touch on at all in her article- is the lack of “eye” her photographer friend had. photography, as with many of the other creative disciplines, needs someone who has the aptitude for taking good pictures. an innate talent, a creative eye, a certain je ne sais quoi, if you will. you can teach method and theory, but its very hard to teach the instinct that accompanies every great and good photographer- either you’ve got it, or you don’t. and if you don’t, then you’ll have pictures like pairs of shoes accompanied by wedding bouquets by someone who is trying very hard to be artistic and failing miserably at it.

as she says, a good dslr does not a photographer make.

have any of our guppan brides hired non-professionals to shoot their wedding photos? how did they turn out? how was the experience of working with them, and if you had a do-over, would you re-hire them?

These are not that bad really. However, if I were on a budget I would have a few good pictures taken by a photographer than have a lot of bad ones. In a desi wedding, one could have the friend take photographs for all the aunties/ uncles etc who have to be in the wedding album as a necessary evil and tie up the loose ends. The real photographer would take the more important pictures.

I hired photography students! That is the way to go, they're cheap, hardworking and my puctures in dim light looked fantastic. And its very tue about having an artistic 'eye',which is why it is so important to refer to portfolios, not of inanimate objects, but of people in desired or unique lighting, expression and colour.

Sfm, that’s such a good idea..

Defo get the best you can afford. It's the only thing that will last of the day.

I personally think hiring a professionional photographer is essential..because you will be looking back at these images for the rest of your life and you will remember your wedding through the eyes of that photographer because what you saw on the day will eventually become a blurr. You will look back to your day through those pictures...
I personally think videographer is important but not as important than the photographer because I think people don't watch their videos all the time but look at their pictures a lot more than their videos.
What's the point of spending thousands of dollars on getting your venue decorated when you don't have decent picture of it to remember how beautiful it looked..
So I would suggest brides to be to cut down on your budget for things like backdrop decorations and use that money to invest in a good photographer...

That's just my 2 cents :D
