seems to work fine for my friend. It has 70K on it too.

Btw what should your bargaining strategy be if you are going to buy a BMW 7.40? Can you even ask for a reduction in price?

I never bought a used car before, and never will !!!

Secondly, I will never buy a 740 .. I am getting an M5 very soon inshallah!

:p

m5:eek:
or m6?

M5

M6 are not in production aasman tootey!!

My dream car would be M1 - the ULTIMATE driving machine .. I wish I got my hands on it ..

Around 500 M1s were manufactured. Although some M1s were built with special Kevlar bodies, most have a fiberglass body designed in Italy by Design Ital, producers of other exotic car bodies such as the Lamborghini. The engine is a 3.5 liter dry sump with separate oil tank and pump. Ohhhhhh mannnnnnnnnnnnnn … I get high lookin at that beauty ..

To answer your question, one should ALWAYS negotiate to get the price down. No harm in trying. Especially if the car is a used one. Their price varies a lot depending on the miles and the condition of the car. A 1998 BMW 740iL can go for as low as $21k and as high as $38k.

For new cars, the leeway is smaller, but depending on how many dealerships are in the neighborhood, you can always negotiate the price down, or ask the dealer to throw in some free stuff which are otherwise dealer-installed optional accessories. Dealers/car salesmen expect such negtiations and they will be terribly surprised if the buyer doesn't even try to negotiate the price.

Another misconception is that if you are leasing a car, then there is no point in negotiating the price, and you will only get adveritsed lease payment. The thing to remember is that the advertised lease is typically for the base model. If you want anything different e.g. different trim level, you must renegotiate the whole darn thing. The negotiated price of the car directly impacts the monthly lease payment. So don't believe the salesman who says, just concentrate on the montly lease payment, the car price is irrelevant. That is just not true, if you take the trouble and learn the lease formula and how the monthly lease payments are calculated.

I dont know why you say that ? Is it a personal experience or hearsay ??

I have at least five friends who have got Nissan Sentra (2 bought new and 3 have used ones) All of them are very happy with their car's performance. Sentra is a very reliable car. One of my friend bought an old Sentra for 1800 USD (from his senior) and drove for 3 yeas sold it for 1500 USD. Another one traded his neon for his Sentra five years ago and still having it.

Sentra is a very nice car for that price.

it is very hard to compare two used cars.

in the 740i issue..

-you can have a 98' 740i in **** condition(meaning owner took no care...dents on door, stains etc..) with 20k on the odometer...for 38,000.

Steep? yes,

-But then you could have a 98' 740i with 90k on the odometer for 26,000. These two cars are very different...

as a general rule used cars cannot be compared from dealer to dealer. because its almost impossible to find two IDENTICAL cars for sale.

speaking about the SENTRA, its not entirely a bad car. All i got against it is the engine. Its too weak.

If i was in pakistan id gladly buy a sentra, because most of them have new engines in them. For instance, my uncle has a 1998 sentra. The old engine was dying so he replaced it...and now it runs fine.

i was thinking about the price range that irem has in mind including all the other things such as insurance , tax plates registration and for that price I would say a reasonably used sentra is perfectly fine for a student and/or a recent graduate.

Now if you can afford to spend more money or have the potential to do so later on, then most definately go for a different car with a different engine, especially if you drive in stop/go traffic or like powerful engines.

irem,

I think you made a wise choice in not going with the sentra. Always remember to check the NADA value for a car, NOT the Blue book value. Dealers only use NADA values, never Kelly blue book, thats for the public. The NADA value for the car you mentioned was around $5500, however, the loan value(the amount any dealer would give you credit for a loan) is around $3700 for this car. Considering the mileage on it, and the fact the AC is not working, in my opinion he is NOT giving you a good deal.

hmcq,

Check the NADA value for the car you want, and use that as a bargaining tool. If you dont have a means to find it, just tell me what year the car is and model and I will find out for you Monday. smile
