The importance of free media is recognized all over the world especially WEST. People believe in what comes on the screen, even if it’s not the truth. Similarly media is responsible to uphold truth and perpetuate it. With the advent of internet & especially after the rol Tehelka](http://www.tehelka.com/) played back in 2001, media websites have achieved recognition as well, though at lower level.
If there is one thing that is lacking badly in our Media it is investigative journalism. Every channel is churning out Mushy, kursi, wardi, LFO, MMA & mix plate of politics to keep us busy and we being callous as we are don’t ask them to highlight our other major issues. Programs hosts are so incompetent, once on AAJ TV the guest had to explain in detail the basic of Hudood law to the host first before she could ask any question. The same ghisey pitay sawal are asked & homework lacks badly. You never see anything like BBC’s hard talk](BBC News - HARDtalk). Exceptions are very rare.Today in Jang there appeared a news item about tape being sent to GEO](Geo News: Latest News Breaking, Live Videos, World, Entertainment, Royal) that contains video related to corruption in society (probably govt.). What that tapes has is only known to GEO but our question is why it’s taking them long to bring it to public. Does it have anything real sensitive or what? Is there anything against the Army, the practically, self appointed, unaccounted for GOD. From the outlook it seems it may well have something on police as the line “* jub qanuun ke rakhwalay hee mujrimun ki pusht-panahi kerainge…*” suggests, God knows.
The good thing is GEO has been trying to contact this guy but as we know GEO is pro-govt. this may well make them less trust worthy in revelation of identity. GEO should make the video public if it serves the purpose of highlighting the issue & bringing out the corrupt to justice. But there is a slim chance they will, specially if its against govt. or CDGK. No matter how strong Musharraf shouts democracy is a far cry in Pakistan. Just opening up bunch of private channels is not freedom of speech & democracy. But if the video contains something which is against national interest, it would be better to keep it to the relevant people but actions should definitely be taken against those involved.
