**Gunmen have opened fire near Pakistan’s army headquarters outside the capital Islamabad, military officials say.**Intense firing is still going on after the gunmen tried to enter the heavily armed complex in Rawalpindi, where senior officers are based.
One report suggests guards had fired at a suspected suicide bomber.
The attack follows a series of bombings across north-western Pakistan. On Friday at least 49 people were killed in a blast in the city of Peshawar.
The attacks come as the army prepares an operation against the Taliban in the tribal region of South Waziristan.
Police official Mohammed Jalil told AP news agency that gunmen drove up to the army compound just before midday local time (0600 GMT).
They took up positions and fired on the compound, security officials said. One of them threw a grenade.
Roads to the area were sealed off, witnesses said.
