jihaalat and jaahilaana show of strength on such occasions...i've seen, on Pakistani TV channels, so many reports of accidental deaths attributed to this gun-totting culture...sometimes, father kills son and, at other times, friend kills a friend...there must be a law against gun firing in the air and strictly enforced!
I have never fired an automatic because it is not allowed in India, but in Jatland firing 32 bore or pistol is common, hell even I have fired these many a times in my cousin's wedding:),pistol is one of the few things that I was allowed to bring in as the dowry of marriage:)
It seems a show off to me for exhibiting how the party is wealthy to display such extravagance. In some parts it may be an indication to enemy that we possess arms.
I recently read that in old days, when a woman was going to give birth to a baby, the women of her house used to make noise by hitting bartan (pots) with other bartan in order to keep the bala (jins, etc) away from the mother and baby. So, may be in a culture firing may be used for the same purpose
I heard from my upwalla friends that in UP....they have tradition of firing during weddings...
I think its to show of strength and must be considered as more manly way of celebration.....:D
Actually the ritual has anceint origins which people have forgotten.
In old times my people shot arrows from bows on Birthdays and Weddings. The idea was it would bring luck the further the arrow flew the greater the luck.
This is a pre Islamic ritual but none of the Saints or Sufis forbid this ritual and so it continued to the modern era. Shooting rifles and pistols became common in the Frontier but the reasons for that over time have changed.
Now its just a show off scene and to show people how rich and powerfull you are but in old days this was not the reason.
Also whenever I used to fire volleys in the air we only shot our rifles with disintegrating rounds or blank catridges... live bullets are too dangerous and stupid.
In Britian automatic weapons are forbidden but there are pistol and rifle licenses and one can still shoot blanks without a license although there needs to be a valid reason and realistic firearms need certificates.
show of power and status I guess, but I have seen people firing without taking into account transformers and overhead cables. Every now and then pleasure for some turns to be mourning for others.
