I just realized that there is no database that records cricketer’s shirt numbers. Let’s pool our knowledge here and come up with a list of shirt numbers we know of.
Please try to keep repetitions at a minimum and read all the posts before adding your reply.
Well the numbers are ridiculous in cricket. They copied that from football. First of all players keep on changing their numbers every tournament. And the scoreboard in the stadium don't even list the number along with names so a spectator can figure which players is where on the field.
I think it's only the Australians who use the numbers the way they're supposed to be used, i.e each person does have a unique number that stays theirs, and can only be changed when they retire etc. (eg. Gillespie requested Paul Rieffel's # 4 when he left the scene, to change from his unlucky # 13).
Their ODI cap numbers are allocated sequentially as a player is picked to represent the national side in ODI's. They also follow a similar pattern for their Test match baggy greens.
Pakistan doesn't seem to be following the same format, as I remember Wasim and Moin were 1 and 2 in the 1999 WC. And now Wasim is 3, and Anwar's got 1.
