According to the strict definitions of some of the ulemas, there are hardly only handful of people who are true muslims! Rest of the population of the world is mushrik in one way or the other (including myself)! And this has been the mixture of world's population from time immemorial!
So does Allah wants to be heaven empty and hell full?

We don't know that 999/1000 people are destined for help. Saying that borders on shirk itself, because you are assuming that you know something that only Allah is aware of. Judging others is also a delicate area, because our only judge is Allah (swt).
Allah (swt) is truly loving and benevolent because no one, no matter how pious, is sinful, and yet Allah forgives our sins. In fact, the most stated characteristics of Allah in the Quran are the Most Gracious, Most Merciful.

Shirk IS indeed 'unforgiveable' and the Holy Book is clear on the matter.
Common sense says its only 'unforgiveable' for those who know the truth and reject it. Not for those who are already in darkness i.e. the non-muslims.

However, I was not assuming. I read it in Hadith - 999/1000 would be Yajuj & Majuj, and 1/1000 would be true believers.

Because God is all knowing and all powerful. If he had created man knowing that 99.9% of his creations were damned to hell, then that would be a cruel and sadistic God.

I don't know who is or isn't going to hell...I'm not one of those Salvationists...but whoever does so will deserve it, and I can think of no better Judge...not some cosmic hippie.
I don't even know if I deserve paradise...living in the lap of luxury and doing squat all...hell, even footing part of the bill for a war, while many a bloody and unjust conflict go on, and poverty is far from gone...and I'm talking among people who are BLOOD relations here...we're either all somewhat decent, or all a bunch of self-righteous a-holes.

^^ Here is a short list of things which are forms of shirk:
- Associating another with Allah
- Worshipping another than Allah
- Assuming to know without knowledge
- Trying to play God
- Calling yourself the most dominant force on earth
- Prioritizing the life of this world (i.e. self-made laws) over the life as prescribed by Quran & Hadeeth (i.e. Sharia)
- Claiming to be only what Allah can be (i.e. the Most Powerful, the All-Knowing)
... catch my drift?
