Can someone please explain how and why this happens? I heard of someone who has it. Have an idea but would like more details.

I am sure you must have heard of that if you get chicken pox once, you never get them again in your life! Well its somewhat true, you may not get the chicken pox but if you get pretty much the same bumps/blisters in your life after you already have had chicken pox, it's called shingles because it 's caused by the same virus!
Now shingles are way more painful than chickenpox and even the itching is worse than what you experience during your chicken pox days!
Shingles is contagious but if you pass it on to someone who has never been exposed to chicken pox before, they will get the chicken pox not the shingles!

Yeah, my bro had them couple years back and the pain was horrible. It was worst then chicken pox.

Since I got the chicken pox a week ago, everyone kept telling me thank goodness it aint shingles because it could have been even more painful and keeping in mind that I had a very mild case I can't even believe how painful that would be!! :-(

Lol… Yeah everyone said the same thing to me…lol
I guess your’s were’t too painful as you had the vaccine. I was feeling horrible, the first few days…lol.. Actually when they came out, they were really small like mosqito bites and the nurse told me it might be hives so I should wait and that is why she didn’t give me the antibiotic. AFter 2 days they were like huge blisters…lol.. and she was like now I can’t give you any…lol…
Oh and I have only big black scar left on my face. Rest are pretty much gone.

my Mom has this. very painful. it is one of the worst things that can happen. thank God, she got better.
It starts with low immune system that gets attacked bad by the resident chicken pox virus - zoster and typically affects one side of the body leaving burning and itchng marks on the person. a very heavy dose o anti biotic helps, but while it takes its course,l shingles really hurts the person who has it.
it is not contagious on its own, but if a person is around who had not had chicken pox before, shingles can activiate that in the person. so one has to be careful.
but how does one not take care of a loved one who is going through so much pain. it is harder to cure. it leaves its marks and itches for long. luckily there is medicine.
yeah mine werent painful but very very very itchy..I scracthed quite a few blisters and now I have some scars left… I hope they will go away soon.. I may apply mederma though to get rid of them as quickly as possible!
I wonder if I should go for the second dose of the vaccination or not!

Oh boy! Hope you feel better Gemini! I had chicken pox when I was 18, during summer holidays. It was horrible! I stayed in mom and dad's room downstairs all day, watched TV, read comics and watched cricket.
I remember had them in my throat and scalp as well. It was horribleeeeeeeeeeeee!

Niksik.. Lusi and I had it pretty much around the same time.. I had a chicken pox vaccination about a week ago so mine was very mild but Lusi had it all pretty serious!
Why do you think I was on GS a lot lately.. I was quaratined and working from home/room. :D

Lol… Nikki baji, now I am fine. It was pretty bad in the beginning, I had bad headache, fever, sore throat, and ugly blisters…lol. On the 2nd day I started crying on the ph to my mom and not because it was painful but I looked ugly…lol..I had a little mirror and I was looking at my face every 10 mins…lol..Anyhow, thank God my face is almost clear now
Gemmi: Apply calamine lotion. I have almost finish one bottle and half of it went on my face and trust me I didn’t get any scar marks…or whatever they are called…
Oh I have heard that vit E cream and coco butter helps with the scars though I didn’t try them.

I didn;t get any on face.. surprise!!! But my eyes were unbelievable itchy so you see I didnt get many blisters but itchiness drove me crazy..I had finished benadryl and aveeno.. it was soothing but still how do you apply lotion in your head.. my head was soo itchy that I wanted to go bald!
Niksik... yep got back to work because I had some inspections scheduled that couldnt be delayed but taking full rest this weekend..however it made me even lazier!
dushwari..thats what I have heard that shingles are very painful.. good to know that your mom is doing fine now, i can't even imagine seeing someone to go through it!! :-(

Yeah, Dushwari, glad to know your mom's better. And glad to know you all are better.
SOme desi aunty told me that applying coconut ka paani on the scars helps them go away. I did that after I healed from chicken pox and have no scars left.

Gemmi, if your eyes were itchy then chech with an eye specialist and don't delay it. The nurse told me that if I had any blisters in the eye or too much itchiness in the eyes then I should see an eye specalist. So maybe you should to be on the safe side or maybe call a nurse or your doctor and ask them.

yep my eyes were very itchy and I guess I shuld go and see an eye specialist!I do have an appointment in September for an annual visit.. lets see if I can reschedule something in advance.. thanks Lusi!!!
