My husband has this problem…he was on a walk/run program but is not able to continue it because of the pain infront of his lower legs. What alternate exercises and workouts are there?or what can opted to reduce or heal this problem while, at the same time, continue running?
Re: Shin Splints!
proper running shoes....its probable your husband has flat (overpronated) feet.......so he needs to buy proper motion control/stability shoes......
so you better visit some sports footwear store..... there will be people who will help you out..
second thing is to run on soft surface as opposed to pavement or road......
althernate exercise is swimming/cycling etc..
Re: Shin Splints!
It happens to my brother. He wears a very tight bandage. Boils sand and it puts his legs in a sandpit/
Obviously, its hard to randomly have a sand pit. He is studying to become a Physio.
But, the boiling of sand and putting it on your legs strengthens the bones and muscles of the foreleg.
Re: Shin Splints!
Does your husband take any bone supplements? The suggestions above are actually excellent.
Re: Shin Splints!
Lol, I just read what I wrote. It seems so random and odd yet true. Hmm..
Oh and Nomi is pretty much bang on when it comes to ergonomics.

Taking a break might be the simplest solution - even though he wants to continue running.
Re: Shin Splints!
its very common when people who havent been active in a while try to do too much too soon. and with the wrong shoes. just take it easy and carry on with the running, maybe do lesser time, more walk less run, definitely don't do anything crazy like speed-work or hills. ice packs immediately after running helps a lot. just don't run thru a lot of pain or you are looking at a stress fracture.
Re: Shin Splints!
To really get rid of shin splints you have to find the real cause for it - and it’s not simple… This is an article about most common reasons for shin splints and how to get rid of it - Hope it helps:
Re: Shin Splints!
yeah....we are thinking about getting good proper running shoes....i hope it solves the problem!
Re: Shin Splints!
It happens with me if I'm wearing the wrong kind of shoes, so getting suitable trainers should be your husband's first priority as Nomi pointed out.
If he still has a problem, then maybe he should consider switching to an elliptical trainer, it is also a good calorie burner and is not too hard on the bones and joints.
