Re: Shilpa Shetty in Big Brother UK

Actress Shilpa Shetty seems in no mood to compromise, when it comes to her country.

Shetty, who is a part of UK’s reality show Big Brother (adapted in India as Bigg Boss), told her roommate Jermaine Jackson, performer Michael Jackson’s brother, that she would fight back with non-violence.

“Since childhood, we have been taught non-violence. The father of our nation, after a long struggle using non-violence as a weapon, fought for our freedom. I will not entertain any comments against my country or my neighbours (Pakistan),” Shetty told Jackson in the show yesterday.

Shilpa Shetty, in the middle of a racist furore, says she will deal with it peacefully
Shetty was referred to as a “f*****g Paki” on the show by Jack Tweed, a 19-year-old, while talking to his 25-year-old girlfriend Jade Goody.

A source from England yesterday said Shetty was winning over the Asian community there.

Reacting to this racial comment, Dale Bhagwagar, Shetty’s publicist and spokesperson, said, “How does it matter who said what to whom? All human beings are ultimately connected by a single binding energy.
So, how does it matter who belongs to what race, religion, country, colour or creed?”

He added, “Pakistanis are no less than Indians. So degrading them is like degrading any citizen of any country. Knowing Shilpa, I am sure she would ultimately forgive and forget Jack’s comment, passing it off as any amateur’s comment who has not learned enough to understand that we are all one.”

MiD DAY acquired excerpts of the conversation between Jermaine and Shilpa aired yesterday on Channel 4 television.

Jermaine: Why are you tense? Things will be fine.

Shilpa: I have decided enough is enough. I will fight back with non-violence. My country has always set an example of winning the hearts of people.

Jermaine: Yes, absolutely. You should not lose so easily.

Shilpa: Since childhood, we have been preached non-violence. The father of our nation (Mahatma Gandhi), after a long struggle using non-violence as weapon, fought for our freedom. I will not entertain any comments on my country or my neighbours (Pakistan).

Jermaine: I think you should look into other issues and leave these alone.

Re: Shilpa Shetty in Big Brother UK

Several Indian newspapers condemned the “racist jibes” thrown at the Bollywood star but said the country should examine its own prejudices before expressing national outrage.

“Discrimination on the basis of colour is ingrained in the psyche of most Indians,” The Hindustan Times said.

Many of India’s one billion people still live within a hierarchy imposed by the Hindu caste system and Muslims face widespread prejudice, being seen as the enemy within since Islamic Pakistan was carved out of British-ruled India.

Indian TV channels have shown continuous footage of the show, in which one housemate has said she was scared to eat food prepared by Shetty because, “you don’t know where those hands have been”, and another referred to her as ?The Indian".

Re: Shilpa Shetty in Big Brother UK

OKAY.. this topic garnered more heat on gupshup than i expected.. anyway

posting to this thread for the 3rd time, i have to say that i felt both sorry yet at the same time happy somehow for what happened to shilpa on big bro..

Sorry.. why? - Well, she really got BULLIED.. what's even more stupid the indians are burning Jade Goody's effigies in india (no wonder); and making fun of her because she's Indian (the accent, the cooking etc.) and even going as far as to ask her to clean the washroom (although maybe this wasn't cuz of her race) was quite impolite.. and Shilpa's ample haplessness ("butt.. butt..") the first time she was bullied made her all the more pathetic.

Happy.. why? - Judging by her comments earlier, Shilpa apparently went in with the expectations that she would be given leniency just because she is a bollywood actress.. and perhaps she sounded overconfident when she said that she hopes to REPRESENT Indians (now why don't they burn effigies of hers?) and keep their dignity high (Huh?).. well now i am glad to be a Pakistani (thank God the producers denied that she was called a "Paki"); I was also relieved that Indians finally got the point that just because they are not accepted by the "goras" even if they do expose their culture to them and that the bollywood awards and professional positions don't ethnically honor them in the eyes of the Western community (although there might be many exceptions but still)

HOPE I MADE MY POINT CLEAR.. THX

Re: Shilpa Shetty in Big Brother UK

^^ I got better things to do than waste my money on such a pointless controversy.

I think this whole thing has gotten blown out of proportion just because Shilpa Shetty is a bollywood actress, thats it. If she was just a regular desi, nothing would have come from it.

Re: Shilpa Shetty in Big Brother UK

^^^good for you
