Shi'ah Bangles (Karras)

Salaam,

Why do Shi’ah’s wear bangles (karras) in their hand and feet?

I know why Sikhs wear them but I didn’t know it was a Islamic thing aswell..

My grandpa’s Mu-boli sis’s grandson use to wear one and I’ve also seen lots of other Shias wear them.

What’s the philosophy behind it?

Re: Shi'ah Bangles (Karras)

its fashionable prolly

No bhai its not fashion , its tradition that goes back to the Martydom of Hazrat Omer Razi AllahTaala.
The persian guy named Feroz Abo Lulu *who assasinated the Great Caliph during prayers wore this karas. The killer Feroz is revered by Shias and they wear these karas to honor him. Also, you would see that the rings their Zakirs and priests wear have this gem called *" FEROZA"- A light blue gem.
Feroza takes its name from Feroz Abo Lulu.
The Prophet peace be upon him and his companions razi Allah Talaaa never wore such ornaments.

Re: Shi'ah Bangles (Karras)

wearing rings , watches and braclets make me uncomfy Plus karas are a safety hazard if you are working in Industrial environment

Re: Shi'ah Bangles (Karras)

Feroza/Ferozi is the farsi/urdu word for the colour and stone turquoise. the word has Parsi/Zoroastrian origins, and is a very common name (after the stone) to this day in iran and the subcontinent esp. with parsies. Its likely Abu Lulu Feroz was named after the stone, very unlikely that it was the other way round. The stone itself has been regarded historically to represent/bring success, probably because it might have been expensive in the old days, which is why the farsi word means successful if I am not mistaken.

The bangles are supposed to represent prison restraints, handcuffs etc that were used on the remnants of Imam Hussain's convoy.

This seems to be more reliable explanation.
Allah knows the best.

It relates to Imam Zain ul Abideen who was taken prisoner, fettered in chains and marched from Kerbala through the bazaars of Kufa and then to Damascus.
and Lol @ the theory of Feroz and Feroza.

I agree with both the explanation. Thanks

Re: Shi'ah Bangles (Karras)

hmm i always thought it was a 'manat' thing, like one wears a taweez to keep safe or something...these karas or dhagas symbolize that. please feel free to correct me if i got it wrong.

Re: Shi'ah Bangles (Karras)

thats a secondary meaning... sort of how people do majlis for mannats etc.

Re: Shi'ah Bangles (Karras)

oh ok

aww thats sweet :)

I personally don't believe that bangles, rings , bands and taweezes can bring good luck or can change our fate. When i was a kid mom once made me wear one for i was very naughty and cranky kid, it never worked though.........

I remember that when i was a teenager , our residence was neark a creek with lots of Mangroves and keekar trees. People used to tie taweez on branches of these trees for mannat and black magic..............I used to take them off..dissect them and throw them in water...just to prove that they worth nothing but later our maid told my mom that i am dessecrating taweezes , so I had to stop.

I strongly believe that these things have no value in Islam.....Man is all about good deeds and bad deeds..Allah will judge us on our deeds not on our taweeze and bangles.

LOL LOL LOL

and ppl at ferozabad named the place after this guy to honor him lolz, this is probably the worst and funniest explanation for anything ever.

bro ravage have explained it very well, kara's resembles bairi's who were put to prisoners of karbala. My sunni frnds who have intrests in stones love feroza too.
I am not sure if its true but from my experience the name feroz is more common in sunni's then shias.

lol man thats really imaginative !
btw a famous king in subcontinent was called feroz shah tughlaq who was never questioned by clergy why he was named feroz ( he had no shia/irani connections he was a turk )

abu lulu is a celebrated hero to many 12ers but thats hardly the reason why they wear karas
these days its mostly due to fashion kinda like what christians do on easter /christmas.
it more of a statement of their being "shias"
they also wear colored threads around their necks which supposedly represent the ropes around captives after karbala...

The karas represent the ropes and Feroza rings represent Feroz Abu Lullu.....I know its emarbassing to accept the full truth caz celebrating assasination of companion of the Prophet(PBUH)and great Caliph of Muslims has its repercussions.

I have confirmed from my shia colleagues ( Iranies ) about feroza and then have reconfirmed that feroza wearing is indeed related to Feroz Abu lullu.
Feroza might have existed before..........just like Bangles existed and were worn before.....but to shias those bangles and feroza has symbolic value

Bangles = representative of some captives as named by some posters

Feroza = representative of the guy who assasinated Hazrat Omer Razi Allah Talaa' Unho

Re: Shi'ah Bangles (Karras)

What?

Shia myself, I don't think it's even related to Abu Lulua.

We wear karas, or at least I do as well as my friends/family to remember Karbala.

Bhai what you think is not a fact.......i confirmed it from many personal friends of mine who are shias both Irani and desi.

Re: Shi'ah Bangles (Karras)

Hmmm, I find that pretty interesting lol..
