I was at a Shia nikkah yesterday and someone there mentioned that it’s longer and different from our nikkahs (we’re Sunni). Since I’ve never really seen a Sunni nikkah, i didn’t know what the differences were. All i noticed was that in the nikkah yesterday the girl was all dressed up and sitting upstairs with other women and the guys were sitting downstairs and they sat down there for a long time and the imam was talking. upstairs we were talking about the bride’s clothes and stuff, not Islamic stuff. Then when the maulvi came upstairs, we hurriedly put a red dupatta over the bride’s face and the maulvi asked her if kabool he ke shadi karni hai Asim blah blah se, and she said yes. And then he went downstairs again and then sometime later we sent down laddoo and namak pare and chai.
okay :s so tell me how sunni and shia nikkah’s differ and what is islamic and what is not because a lot of the things we did yesterday didn’t seem to me to be like islamic but i dont know.
How were nikkah’s done during the prophet’s time? what is required Islamicially (for sunni’s) and what is just extra un-needed cultural stuff?
so far from what u have written about the shiaa nikah i dont see how it differs from sunni traditions....
laddoo and all is just a regional tradition, nothing to do with either sunni or shiaa belief....
the longer time may be due to the khutba, for which i dont think any specific length is mentioned....
It has 2 allamas - (moulanas) one from the brides side and one from the grooms side, as compared to one Qazi in the sunni nikkah, all points in the documents are filled out, the woman signs it first then comes the turn of the groom. (usual stuff), then comes sura fateha and greetings.
The actual difference is in the divorce, it aint just shouting three times talaq - there is a Talaqnama for it just as their is a Nikahnama. (I think its good, as the woman is confident that she is bonded by documented proof not just words of mouth)
