Traditionally shia muslims in India have voted for BJP. Lakhnow has been a BJP area. BJP president this time also contested from Lakhnow and won, where shia muslims have big population.
What are the reasons.

BJP has won from Muslim majority districts, but Muslims have voted for BJP.
Not sure Sunni/Shia percentage of these districts.

Shi'as have always been darling of the ruling party. they go with the wind which ever it is blowing. they are in minority in the country but majority in certain cities. they feel protected by supporting the ruling party. one of the Shi'a BJP spokesperson is from Allahabad where Shi'as are not in majority. it's their false sense of security because when the Hindu-Muslim riots erupt, the mob doesn't care who is who.

But I was hearing an expert on radio, that even last time, shia muslims supported BJP.
"Shias are supporting BJP because of local issues. Muslims from the Sunni sect oppose our Taziya procession and Azadari during Moharram in Dosipura. There is also a dispute over an Imambada land. BJP openly supports us and now we will support in return,” Maulana Aqeel said. Another Shia cleric, Baqar Balliavi, based in Varanasi also admitted that Shias will vote for Modi.

i think they just want to protect what they consider their right(right of Tabbara). Do you know in lucknow before partition it was illegal to praise sahabah:razi: in luknow.
They can only achive this by supporting who ever wins. Same goes for many “mashaikh” who support BJP. So it is not only shias but some groups of “sunnis” also support BJP
