Re: Shia and Songs during Muharram

Not only they dont listen songs they dont even watch TV go out n have fun

Re: Shia and Songs during Muharram

I observed different people behave differently.

Back in 90's with the the start of Muharram all radio and tv channels stopped running songs. I even remember watching PTV drama (especially that were being repeat telecasted from PTV-2) where they muted the scenes in which shehnai or even flute music was used in background. They have to follow this decorum until 13th of Muharram. Now with the advent of music channels, they follow this for 9th & 10th and I even watched many news channels playing high beat music on 9th & 10th.

As far as society as a general is concerned, it was considered odd to listen to music in muharram (even in Sunni families) and it is still being followed atleast for 8-13th Muharram.

I saw mixed behavior in Shias also. Some people don't listen to music until soyam, some until chehlum and some till 8th Rabi ul Awwal. My boss (belonging to Fiqah Jafria) who has a very good choice for music and I see him listening to Lata & Kishore while driving, keeps Cds of Nohas / Marsia during 2.5 months and don't listen to music. Even I was surprised when one of our colleagues invited him for his valeema next week, he excused saying we don't attend ceremonies like this till 8th Rabi ul Awwal.

Re: Shia and Songs during Muharram

According to our fiqh, music is not allowed during any time of the year.

^tell me seriously......u use google translator, don't u?

Re: Shia and Songs during Muharram

its a cultural thing - not religion
In general, people avoid listening to music or any other entertainment out of respect, and that goes for both Shias and Sunnis. Weddings are also not planned during these days.
This is more part of the sub continent culture. The degree of "respect" varies around the world.
