Sheshi Hydro Power Project to revolutionise Northern Areas
Staff Report
CHITRAL: The Sheshi Hydro Power Project (SHPP) that is under construction in Shehshi Valley of Drosh Tehsil will bring revolution in the area by supplying electricity to Sheshi Village, Drosh, Nagar, Kaiso, Jinjirat, Wardab, Khairabad, Biori and adjacent areas of Drosh Tehsil. The SHPP is a project of the NWFP government. Launched in April 2004, the project is likely to be completed at the end of this year and has the capacity to generate 1,875-kilo watt power.
Before the SHPP was launched in 2004, there was a small hydro power station in the valley, which was known as the Sheshi Power House and generated 300 KW power. The power generated by the Sheshi Power House could not fulfill the demand of the area. Apart from that, power had to be frequently suspended, when the floods broke the water channel used for by the power station.
Keeping in view the electricity demand of the area, the Sarhad Hydro Development Organisation (SHYDO) launched the SHPP to replace the old power station. The old power station was also a property of the SHYDO.
Chitral has an acute shortage of electricity despite having the capacity of 4,500 Mega Watt power generation. A transmission line of 3,300 KV has been carried there from Dir via Lawari Pass.
Since the Lawari Pass is at the altitude of 10,500 feet and receives heavy snowfall during winter, the power supply is disconnected to Chitral due to snowfall and continued rain. The SHPP will solve the problem of long loadshedding in the area especially in Tehsil Drosh, said Sub-Engineer Tanweer.
He said that 85 percent work, including installation of penstock, fitting of machinery and spillway had been completed and the water flow was also feasible for the project. The project will be completed with a cost of Rs 256 million and will be connected to the WAPDA distribution line, since the SHYDO has no such line for power supply directly to the consumers.
Sheshi koh Sohrab Khan, the local Nazim, who is cooperating with the SHYDO for the completion of the project, has complained that the SHYDO had ignored his area during survey for power supplying from the project.
He demanded the SHYDO and WAPDA include his area from Sheshi to Madaglash in their survey for supply of power so that the people living in the neighborhood could benefit.
