Sherry Rehman to be charged with blasphemy?

Shame on the court for ordering to register case against her.

Embassy Row: Dangerous duty for Pakistan

Serving as Pakistan’s ambassador to the United States is risky business, as the country’s former envoy noted after hearing about the legal threat against the current ambassador.

Ambassador Sherry Rehman, who has been in Washington for a year, is under police investigation in Pakistan on accusations of violating the country’s blasphemy law, a charge that carries the death penalty.

Pakistan’s supreme court last week ordered a police inquiry into a complaint from a businessman against Ms. Rehman for comments she made in 2010 as a member of the Pakistani parliament. Ms. Rehman had proposed legislation to remove the death penalty for blasphemy convictions after Rimsha Masih, a teenage Christian girl, faced execution for burning pages of the Koran.

Following an international outcry, a court threw out her blasphemy conviction two months ago after a Muslim cleric, Hafiz Mohammed Khalid Chishti, was accused of framing the girl.

The complaint against Ms. Rehman, a prominent member of the ruling Pakistan People’s Party, came from a businessman, Muhammad Faheem Ahkter Gill, 31, who claimed he was shocked by Ms. Rehman’s comments in a television interview in 2010. He told Pakistani reporters that he had tried for two years to get a court to hear his complaint.

In that interview, Ms. Rehman talked about her goal of removing the death penalty from Pakistan’s blasphemy laws, which are the strictest of any Muslim-majority nation. She dropped her efforts after facing resistance from her own party.

Defendants accused of blasphemy often face street mobs who kill them, even if they are acquitted. Many defendants flee Pakistan after they are freed by the courts.

Husain Haqqani, the Pakistani ambassador Ms. Rehman replaced in Washington, was shocked when he heard of the case against the ambassador.

“It seems that ambassador of Pakistan to the United States is becoming a hazardous job,” he said in an email to Embassy Row.

Mr. Haqqani, ambassador from 2008 to 2011, faced treason charges after a Pakistani-American businessman, Mansoor Ijaz, claimed he and Mr. Haqqani were involved in a plot to seek U.S. military intervention in Pakistan to prevent a military coup.

Mr. Haqqani strongly denied the allegations but resigned rather than face the vagaries of the Pakistani judicial system. He now teaches international relations at Boston University.

“Pakistan’s extremists charged me with treason without putting me on trial under law, and they seem to be doing something similar by accusing Ambassador Sherry Rehman of blasphemy,” Mr. Haqqani said.

He criticized the supreme court for accepting the petition of blasphemy instead of insisting the complaint be filed in a lower court, from which the case could work itself up the judicial system through appeals.

“These petitions generate a hostile environment without a formal charge or trial and encourage extremists to physically threaten an ambassador viewed as a traitor or blasphemer,” Mr. Haqqani said.

He added his concern that “ideologically motivated judges” are damaging Pakistan’s “image as a modern democracy.”

Re: Sherry Rehman to be charged with blasphemy?

Some people have too much time on their hands.

Re: Sherry Rehman to be charged with blasphemy?

that is why i dont see any hope for pakistan for at least one full generation who got mentally corrupt and extreme-i-zed starting zia ul haq time...

problems like corruption, poverty, caste system, inequality, corrupt politicians ... I can live in pak with these problems...every third world country has these problems and it takes centuries to eradicate these problems at grass root level... juts look at india...we need to put institutions in place, let democracy run and have elections on regular basis.....and hope for these problems to resolve over time

but what pak has as a unique problem is the religious extremism of its middle class..... its middle class's callous attitude towards minorities....religious extremism of its military and civil establishment ....hatred towards secularism at the state level ..... these aspects are self-detrimental and will cannibalize Pakistan from within

Re: Sherry Rehman to be charged with blasphemy?

And then Pakistanis wonder why their country has such a terrible reputation in the world

Re: Sherry Rehman to be charged with blasphemy?

If calling for removal of the laws is blasphemous then people who introduced the law should also be put on trial for not introducing this law on August 15, 1947, all previous governments should also be put on trial.

Re: Sherry Rehman to be charged with blasphemy?

There is only one insitituion working in Pakistan. ARMY. And all others running by jokers.

Re: Sherry Rehman to be charged with blasphemy?

Even army is joker, they only create noise when army-men are killed on borders by NATO but when civilians die they are silent as stone.

Re: Sherry Rehman to be charged with blasphemy?

what a stupid waste of time. SC seriously needs to sort out its priorities.

Re: Sherry Rehman to be charged with blasphemy?

Right, Bas Allah ka karam hi hai Jo Baat abhi tak bani hui hai.

Re: Sherry Rehman to be charged with blasphemy?

Has Mr. Chishti been given the death penalty for framing the Christain girl?

Re: Sherry Rehman to be charged with blasphemy?

No civilian dies on Pakistan western borders by NATO (in most cases). Only terrorist and their accomplices die (intentionally), same terrorists and their accomplices who are not only terrorising Pakistanis all over Pakistan but are also killing personals of Pakistan army. So, for Pakistan army, these terrorists getting killed is job well done … regardless of whose bullets (Missiles or bombs) killed them.

Pakistan accuses its ambassador to U.S. of blasphemy | Reuters

MULTAN, Pakistan | Thu Feb 21, 2013 7:42am EST

(Reuters) - Pakistani police accused the country’s ambassador to the United States on Thursday of blasphemy, a crime that carries the death penalty, in connection with a 2010 TV talk show, they said.

The accusation against Ambassador Sherry Rehman is the latest in a string of controversial blasphemy cases in Pakistan, a largely Muslim nation whose name translates as Land of the Pure.

According to Pakistan’s blasphemy laws, anyone found to have uttered words derogatory to the Prophet Muhammad can be put to death. Those who are accused are sometimes lynched by mobs even before they reach court.

Rehman has already faced death threats from militants after calling for reforms to the country’s anti-blasphemy law, according to court documents. Two politicians who suggested reforming the law were assassinated.

The case against Rehman was brought by businessman Muhammad Faheem Gill, 31, who said that the comments Rehman made about the law on the Pakistani talk show in 2010 were blasphemous.

“I’ve been trying to get this case registered for the last three years, ever since I saw that TV show,” Gill told Reuters. “I’ve even gone to the highest court. I’m glad that action will finally be taken now.”

Gill went to the Supreme Court with his complaint after police refused to register it. The court ordered police in the central Pakistani city of Multan to investigate.

Blasphemy accusations are on the rise, according to a report released by the Islamabad-based think tank, Center for Security Studies. At least 52 people accused of blasphemy have been killed since 1990.

The charge is difficult to defend since blasphemy is not defined and courts often hesitate to hear evidence, fearful that reproducing it will also be blasphemy.

Recent cases have included a teacher who made a mistake setting homework, a man who threw away a business card belonging to a man name Mohammed, and a Pakistani Christian girl, Rimsha Masih, who was accused of burning pages of Muslim holy texts last year.

The teenager was cleared by a court after it emerged that she may have been framed by a cleric trying to evict Christians from his area. She and her family are now in hiding.

Rehman, a prominent member of the ruling Pakistan People’s Party, was appointed as ambassador to the United States in November 2011.

laanat on the accusers, in an ideal situation the petitioner should be sent to a mental asylum for having him checked for any damage.

Re: Sherry Rehman to be charged with blasphemy?

Among this pathetic government there are a few people who are genuinely working for Pakistan's interests and this is how we repay them.
