Can someone please tell me what type of shell fish is haraam and what type is halal, and why this is the case.
And also what about squid?
Many Thanks.

The hanafi school of thought says that shellfish are not technically creatures of the sea as they can survive on land. The other schools say it is permissible because they do live in water.
I have looked into this and personally anything that comes from the sea is fine for me. This includes squid, prawns, lobster and octupus (if you like that sort of thing!).
At the end of the day it is down to your interpretation of the quranic ayat.
Any creature that drinks blood is haraam. Some argue that its makrooh, not haraam. However, the consensus is, that its not advisable to eat any creature that drinks blood.
Blood is consumed by animals of prey. On the land, we have animals like the tiger, lion, etc. In the sky we have eagles, falcons, buzzards etc. These classifications have some further classifications as well. But specifically talking about seafood here, first of all you have to look for creatures of prey.
Very few fish are actually vegetarians. Most fish eat smaller fish. So the division here is made in how they eat them. Most fish eat smaller fish by swallowing them whole. And they are allowed. But fish like the shark, whale, octopus, etc, bite into their prey and make them bleed, and then eat them. That makes their consumption by humans haraam or makrooh, depending on who you are talking to. But nonetheless, its not advisable.
The only shellfish that meet this criterion are shrimps/prawns. Lobsters cut into their prey, hence are termed haram or makrooh by different scholars. I believe squids have the same process of capturing and eating their prey, except they have beaks for biting into their prey instead of teeth, hence they too are haraam/makrooh.
Wallaho Alim
According to what I know, marine animals which live on dry land also (ie survive on it) are haram. Like lobster, crab for instance.
Don't waste time, or it'll waste you @;-)

Are you sure? I may be wrong, but I thought that it was dead animals and blood that was haraam. This is becuase both are likely to contain diseases and parasites.
I didn't realise that marine-born creatures drank blood. Even if they did, if we drain the blood, like we do with everything else we eat, would it not be okay to eat it then?
Like I said, I could be wrong. Can you please clarify this?

by drinking blood, i didnt mean as in actually seperating the blood from the body and drinking it. The point was, that when an animal of prey kills its prey and eats it, it invariably consumes running blood as well which has been exposed, and is just as likely to be diseased. Hence, when this diseased blood is consumed by an animal of prey, it enters their body as well and is just as likely to commit those parasites to the host animal.
Eg, when a shark kills another fish, it doesnt exactly drink the blood, but the blood does come out of the bloodstream, and is intentionally or unintentionally consumed by the shark. Whereas, compare that to other fish that eat their prey as a whole, they do not cause the blood to exit the blood stream in any way. This explanation is only for seafood, since only under water carnivores are halal.
Land and air carnivores are not allowed at all, even though they might eat their prey as a whole. Only vegetarian land animals are halal. And even they have further classifications.
i was watching this show on tv...they were showing a squid eating another one. Now isnt that haraam?....animals that eat their own kind i mean...
*Al-Ma'idah- 5:3
Forbidden to you (for food) are: dead meat, blood, the flesh of swine, and that on which hath been invoked the name of other than Allah. that which hath been killed by strangling, or by a violent blow, or by a headlong fall, or by being gored to death; that which hath been (partly) eaten by a wild animal; unless ye are able to slaughter it (in due form); that which is sacrificed on stone (altars); (forbidden) also is the division (of meat) by raffling with arrows: that is impiety. This day have those who reject faith given up all hope of your religion: yet fear them not but fear Me. This day have I perfected your religion for you, completed My favour upon you, and have chosen for you Islam as your religion. But if any is forced by hunger, with no inclination to transgression, Allah is indeed Oft-forgiving, Most Merciful. *

here’s something that supports my post above, according to this, a squid is a carnivore and therefore haraam:
HALAAL GUIDELINES FOR A MUSLIM DIET
On the authority of Abu Huraira (May Allah be pleased with him) who said, The Messenger of Allah (may the blessings and peace of Allah be upon him) said,
“Allah, the Almighty is pure and accepts only that which is pure. Allah has commanded the faithful to do that which he commanded the messengers, and the Almighty has said, 'O ye Messengers! Eat of the pure things, and do righteous actions'. And Allah the Almighty has said: "O ye who believe! Eat of the pure things wherewith we have provided you.” Then he mentioned (the case of) a man who, having journeyed far, is disheveled and dusty and who spreads out his hands to the sky (saying): O’ Lord! – While his food is unlawful, his drink unlawful, and he is nourished unlawfully, so how can his supplication be answered!" (Muslim)
Islamic Law has given clear guidance in respect of Halaal (lawful) and Haraam (Unlawful) based on the teachings of the Noble Qur’an and the Sunnah (Teachings of the Holy Prophet Sallallaahu AAlayhi Wasallam).
What is Halaal (permissible) is declared from the Qur’anic injunctions and Muslims are commanded to strictly adhere to these injunctions in all aspects of life.
Almighty Allah Taála says, “People of Imaan! Eat of the pure things (Halaal) that We have provided for you, and be grateful to Allah Taála” (Surah Baqarah 2:172)
The Holy Prophet Muhammad (Sallallaahu Alayhi Wasallam) has declared, “Whatever Allah Taála has declared lawful in His Book (Noble Qur’an is lawful, and whatever He has declared unlawful is unlawful, and whatever He remained silent about is forgiven. Then accept those bounties of Allah because Allah does not forget anything”.
Understanding of the term Halaal and Haraam
Halaal: Lawful and Permissible / can be used.
Haraam: Unlawful and Impermissible / abstain from it / totally forbidden.
Ingredients to be checked in any product:
Alcohol or liquor
Animal gelatine
Animal Fats or Rennet
If any product has any one of these Three (3) as an ingredient then it will be Haraam/Impermissible to consume or use.
*Special Points should be noted
*
Pork and pork products are totally forbidden.
As for dairy products like cheese and margarine only microbial (of plant origin) rennet is permissible.
The utensils should be separate for Muslims. There should be no contamination of Halaal and non-Halaal.
Any item marked or stamped with any form of Halaal certification must be verified by Appointed the Muslim theologians, who are well versed with the Islamic requirements regarding Halaal.
As for imported chickens and meat we cannot guarantee their Halaal status as we do not inspect their respective plants and are not familiar of the Halaal procedure.
Consumption of any morsel of Haraam, affects the acceptance of Ibaadat (worship).
The following foods are permissible for Muslims
Fish
All types of poultry, partridges, pigeons, etc.
Goats, sheep, cattle, camel and all types of buck, buffalo.
Rabbits
The above must be slaughtered by a Muslim according to Islamic rules, otherwise their meat will be considered Haraam. Fish does not have to be slaughtered. A fish that has died a natural death is not permissible to eat.
Haraam foods: Unlawful
Haraam foods are those foods which are prohibited by Allah and the Prophet (Sallallaahu Alayhi Wasallam).
**All carnivorous (meat eating) animals **and birds, e.g. lions, tigers, vultures, eagles, etc.
Any Halaal animal that has died due to natural causes, killed by some wild animal, by a fall, blow or slaughtered by a non-Muslim.
Flesh that has been sacrificed for some God or Goddess.
All forms of najasat (impurities).
Drugs/Intoxicants.
Donkeys, monkeys, elephants, etc.
Food containing Haraam items to be avoided at all times e.g. fish prepared with wine, etc. cakes, ice-cream containing rum or brandy or any Alcohol or liquor.
Contamination of a Halaal item with non-Halaal will render it non-Halaal/Haraam and unacceptable.

Thankyou everyone for your input, especially hk and eastern analogue, you have made things much clearer.
