Shelf life of lipsticks/glosses

Lets say i wanna stock up on some lipsticks or lipglass, how long can i keep them for? Is it even a good idea?!

Re: Shelf life of lipsticks/glosses

As long as it's kept in room temperature or in cold (like in refrigerator), they can last years. I have lipsticks that are 6-7 years old and are still good. As long as the smell, texture, look has not changed.....it's fine. The same goes for any makeup (blush, foundation, powder etc.). The minute you notice the product's texture/smell/finish has changed.....it's time to toss it.

Question: Why do you want to "stock up"? Is it a color that's being discontinued and you haven't seen the color in another brand?

Re: Shelf life of lipsticks/glosses

Nope! Its the colors i use and i am afraid neither i nor anyone close would be travelling in nxt 6 months or so, hence i am thinking to store up on them.

Re: Shelf life of lipsticks/glosses

Lipsticks last quite long actually. 2-3 years easily if kept in room temperature and away from direct sunlight.

Items like Mascara have the shortest shelf life, 6 months max. After that, the double dipping and air exposure increases bacterial growth in the product plus it begins to get clumpy and get's a petrol-like smell.

Items like Blush and anything powder based also have quite a long shelf life. Blushes and eye shadows last as long as lipsticks or more. Either you break them (they can still be fixed with rubbing alcohol) or you finish them. They go on for 3-4 years easy. I get bored of the colours after that. lol

Foundations shouldn't be kept for more than a year. The average person's color changes every season so sticking to one color is a bad idea in terms of your makeup look. Plus the older the foundation gets, the easier the chances of it oxidizing (it ends up becoming darker or gets an organge-sh tinge). Some foundations separate as well but then again, foundations like Chanel Vitalumiere are already water based foundations and are separated to begin with.

We made our own foundations back in pharmacy school (make up and skin care is considered a part of pharmaceutics) and it's pretty much safe to say sticking to any make up too long is a bad idea. Everything under the sun has shelf life and for the sake of your own skin its a good idea to follow those dates. lol. :D

Re: Shelf life of lipsticks/glosses

For lipstick the longest i kept one was 2 years, i think most have a shelf life of 1year you will need to check it . I think for lipsticks they can last long but make sure to clean them by wiping a tissue around it every once in a while, you can even add a bit of hand sanitiser to the tissue.
However the main issue is i find they become drier as time passes. Personally i haven't experienced anything bad but please be careful.

Ah ok. I'm not sure how long it takes you to finish 1 tube of lipstick but as long as they're kept in room temperature and out of direct sunlight, they should last you 2-3 years easily.

Re: Shelf life of lipsticks/glosses

i have only fully used up one shade of lipstick so far lol...imagine! That too hasa bit left but i replaced it with new. So yah don't wear much of makeup anyways but since i get a free lipstick against my containers, i am thinking might as well stock up on a shade i wear most nowadays even though its only probably 20% used so far.
