I just heard Ian healy and Richie benaud, commentating and they said "** for those of you who havent heard, UCBSA has relieved Shaun pollock of captaincy with immediate effect and new captain will be named on march the 27th** "
I searched the websites, didnt find any link, maybe you guys will help me out here???
I hope not. It is not always a captain's fault if his players don't deliver on the field....people just go looking for scapegoats and rather than deal with players who don't perform, they go after captains.
I think its a bad move, Pollock was a good captain, being a frontline bowler and being a captain at the sametime is a tough job but he still maintained his team to be 2nd best after Australia and took South Africa to number 1 in WTC, that is a huge accomplishment itself.
Shaun Pollock was sacked as South Africa captain on Saturday after the host nation’s disappointing performance in the World Cup.
Pollock, 29, was dismissed from the job after meeting selectors on Friday. South Africa failed to reach the second round of the tournament.
A statement from the United Cricket Board of South Africa (UCBSA) said it had been decided to strip Pollock of the captaincy with immediate effect.
“An announcement tomorrow will name a replacement captain,” the statement said.
“Shaun is a valuable member of the national squad and one of the world’s best all rounders,” said UCBSA chief executive Gerald Majola. “He will continue to play a vital role in the team.”
South Africa, one of the pre-tournament favourites, failed to qualify for the Super Sixes after losing the tournament’s opening match to West Indies and a rain-shortened game against New Zealand.
They were eliminated after a tie with Sri Lanka in another rain-affected match decided by the Duckworth-Lewis method. Pollock said afterwards the South Africans had miscalculated the target.
Pollock took over the captaincy in 2000 after former skipper Hansie Cronje was banned for life after admitting taking money from bookmakers.
Well Pollock was a good captain. He was awesome in the inaugural indoor series played in melbourne, Australia. Well i think fast bowlers as captain lose their edge with passing time. It happened with Walsh, he was awesome in starting only to lose the plot in the middle. Same is true for Waqar and Pollock. And to some extent it happend with Wasim as well. But he has had so many stints, its hard to tell :)

true... but i noticed that the captains can perform better if they r not captaining the side...

I would say the likely replacement would be Mark Boucher but other candidates like Kallis, Kirsten, Gibbs, Klusener are also possible.

I for one is very glad that Pollock is gone. I prefer him being remembered as one of the best all-rounders and bowlers the South Africa has produced. I maintained this view from the first day he was appointed Captain. The sports scene in South Africa is racially full of landmines and Pollock is just a too good person for the turmoil. Now he can concentrate on his bowling and yet again take the top spot as bowler away from McGrath.
Kirsten and Klusener will retire soon.
Kallis and Gibbs has never captained any worthwhile side.
The selectors might go with Boucher only because he is the present vice-captain. He is though a poor choice as proven by his track record as stand in captain.
The only rear pretenders are Smith and McKenzie, both of which is not sure of their own places.
Nice corner the political sensitive selectors of South Africa have painted themselves into. They tried to be "affirmative" (racist) and forgot to plan for the future.
Opening batsman Graeme Smith will succeed Shaun Pollock as South African captain, an administrator said on Saturday.
“It’s time to get behind the new captain, Graeme Smith,” Logan Naidoo told South African television.
Naidoo is president of the KwaZulu-Natal Cricket Union and a member of the United Cricket Board general council.
Pollock was sacked on Saturday after the host nation failed to get past the first round of the World Cup.
Smith, 22, has played just eight Tests, none of them outside South Africa. He was left out of South Africa’s original World Cup squad but called up as a replacement for the injured Jonty Rhodes.
Thats just crazy, he is only 21 years old and he is the captain, before he struggled to make the WC Squad but now he is the captain. I've heard that he was a really good captain for a county team in SA, but I still think he should have been atleast made the vice captain for a while.
yeah agreed Umair :k: But I think , they dont wanna keep any hangover from the Cronje era and rebuild the team from scratch. And this might work as well I think pakistan and England too should do something like this

Smith never struggled, there was a vacany for one player to open with Gibbs, kirsten was given more preference because of his experience. Smith maintains a very high average and is a consistent opener. Initially he was unlucky for not being chosen despite his immpressive form but Rhodes injury made it possible for him to get back to the squad which I thought further strengthened SA batting line.
He might be too young to be a captain though. I agree on that. It will be lil weird for shaun pollock playing under him.
