Naveed and Zahid Banned for one match

Pakistan’s fast bowler Muhammad Zahid and batsman Naved Latif only have themselves to blame for having missed a golden opportunity to play today in the Sharjah Cup against Kenya.

The two were handed down a one-match ban by the Pakistan team tour disciplinary committee headed by manager Haroon Rasheed after they showed up for the nets session one hour late.

Sources close to the team said Zahid and Naved were serious contenders to play in today’s match against Kenya since Pakistan had already qualified for the final.

“The tour selection committee wanted to have a look at Zahid bowling off his shortened run-up and also give Naved another crack after he failed in the opening game against Zimbabwe,” a source said.

“However the two went off on Monday morning for some shopping without informing the management and due to some problem showed up one hour late for the nets session at the Sharjah stadium,” the source confided.

"A hearing was held immediately at the stadium by the disciplinary committee and it was decided they should be banned for one match.

“The two were also reprimanded for their casual behaviour,” the source added.

However, officially the Pakistan team management has made no announcement about the one-match ban.

“Such disciplinary actions are not made public because they are dealt with at an internal level in the team,” the source stated.

The new team management of captain Rashid Latif, coach Javed Miandad and Haroon Rasheed have been very particular about disciplinary issues likes curfew timings, turning up on time for practice and match schedules and general dress behaviour," the source said.

Zahid has not played for Pakistan since the tour of South Africa in November and December last year.

Pakistan to field unchanged squad](http://www.jang-group.com/thenews/apr2003-daily/08-04-2003/sports/s2.htm)

**Pakistan will field an unchanged 12-man squad against World Cup semi-finalists Kenya here today in the Sharjah Cup.

“We will finalize the playing eleven before the match after having a look at the condition of the pitch we will be playing on,” said Pakistan captain Rashid Latif.

“We are not taking the Kenyan team lightly as they did well in the World Cup and are a very professional side. They can spring a surprise anytime and on their day. And ours is also still a blend of experienced and young players so we have to be cautious.”

Kenya have nothing to lose from Tuesday’s game since they are out of the final having lost to Zimbabwe and Sri Lanka and Rashid said this sort of situation would be to the advantage of their opponents.

Pakistan and Kenya will meet here for the first time since the triangular series held in Nairobi, Kenya last year in August where Pakistan won all their games against the African nation.

Infact Kenya have yet to defeat Pakistan in a One-day International.

Pakistan’s coach Javed Miandad made it clear he wanted his boys to follow the same plans and pattern that they had adopted successfully in the first two matches.

Miandad said he was hoping for a similar performance against Kenya as nothing succeeded like success.

“If we can make it three wins in a row it would put this young team in a positive and confident state of mind for the final on Thursday.”

He also made it clear he was aware of talk back home about him favouring his nephew Faisal Iqbal for selection and insisted the best teams had been picked in this tournament so far and according to the requirements of the conditions.

"If Faisal is good he will play. If he is not scoring runs he will not be played. We are just trying to pick the best possible eleven and not favouring anyone.

And if Faisal is good in these sort of conditions then he will play."

Miandad said that he was also aware of remarks that any victory in Sharjah only created a false impression about the ability of the present Pakistan team and it was a false feeling of well being.

“You play and win anywhere it matters a lot. What we are doing here is just getting our basics right and playing with a plan and combination. Whether we win in Sharjah or Australia what matters is we are winning.”

Miandad stated that given the fact that the selectors had inducted number of new players and recalled the ones who were on the fringe of selection in the senior team the Sharjah Cup was a good learning ground for them.

“I believe this learning process of this new look team will continue for a long time but I am also confident that we can play as well and competitively against the stronger teams like Australia and South Africa. The key is to fine tune the players, keep them motivated and interested and as they keep on playing with the right attitude for them every match becomes the same.”

The Pakistan coach insisted that once the players developed the habit of doing the right things in the right manner and realizing that to win against any opposition you had to score more runs, take more wickets and field better than them, they could play with confidence against any team."

The one good thing about Miandad is that he does not believe in just words and his passion to see the team do well and train hard is translated on the field where he himself actively takes part in the training and fielding sessions.

The 12 to be considered for selection include: Taufeeq Umar, Muhammad Hafeez, Faisal Iqbal, Yousuf Youhana, Younis Khan, Abdul Razzaq, Rashid Latif, Shoaib Malik, Rana Naveed-ul-Hasan, Umer Gul, Muhammad Sami and Danish Kaneria.

intersting, he mentioned the pressure on faisal and himself. So far the kid hasnt let him down.

Since Muhammad Zahid couldn't play, but Mizbah should have played. The poor lad didn't get a single chance and he was very impressive against Australia.
What about Dinesh Kaneria, I thought he should have been given another chance, maybe in place of Shoaib Malik.

C'mon yaar
