and
- to a “friend” you’ve met on an online public forum.

Re: Sharing or Guarding personal information
Personally, I don't like sharing any personal stuff .. .. i am just conservative on that .. :) .. no matter how much anonymity you give to me or no matter how close next friend is .. .. I just don't share the very personal stuff ..
Re: Sharing or Guarding personal information
same is my case ... especially say no to ur close sweeet frdzzz ...:)
Re: Sharing or Guarding personal information
yup .. the more close friends are they, the more vulnerable you would be to them if share lots of secrets. even a single joke of them would hurt you real bad .. :) .. end result friendship would be at stakes.

Me 2. I just dont understand why your online friend needs to know which town you live or what color your hair are. I mean i can understand this being shared when and if there is an extreme comfort level but if there is not and even then people wanting such details off you, then that is quite freaky.
Re: Sharing or Guarding personal information
okay, I have no issue telling these things. But i have issues telling my "personal" things.

Re: Sharing or Guarding personal information
^ well when i said hair color, i meant y bother? no trouble for me to tell ya but like why wud someone care abt it?! And i think giving out my location is a private info. I guess it varies from person to person.
Re: Sharing or Guarding personal information
everyone defines his/her personal things on different grounds .. :) ..
Re: Sharing or Guarding personal information
T1000
you're so right about becoming vulnerable, especially on all those social networking sites
a girl i know, she's in late teens so very impressionable but she got really attached to a guy on there and he kind of took advantage of some of the photos and personal info she had shared with "friends"in her friendlist, he just got her to such a low by doing some underhanded stuff to her b/c she didn't want to continue their relationship.
Re: Sharing or Guarding personal information
No "online friends" for me. I sometimes play video games with randoms and add them but besides talking about the game itself there's not much more. Even my facebook profile is pretty much a joke (not one serious thing on there).
Re: Sharing or Guarding personal information
No one should share specific personal information to any online forum. However, general info like country, state and city should be alright.
Re: Sharing or Guarding personal information
Thoughts? Yes, Personal Information? :nono:
Re: Sharing or Guarding personal information
Agreed.
As for the question - that would be silly really. You wont walk up to someone in the street become friends with them and let them know everything about u.. would u?
Re: Sharing or Guarding personal information
Some of those thoughts and reactions to another's posts are personal thoughts, and despite the supposed anonymity we believe we have, some people here have met in person. So, while I don't think most of us are planning on divulging our name, address and social security number - should we also be careful about the thoughts we posts and how we present ourselves?

Not really. I dont see any harm in putting up thoughts if personal information has not been disclosed. If you are sharing any incident/family problem, its always advised to change characters of the story.
Re: Sharing or Guarding personal information
ON A forum like this-anything,thats the whole point of a forum right..
never to friends, people i actually know. which is why i still have friends, a family and thankfully a husband.....lol.
Re: Sharing or Guarding personal information
I used to be very private about sharing information online but over the last five years our lives have pretty much come wide open to the public. The wife is a very public figure in the medical community here and I'm a very prominent figure in the academic community. EVERYBODY knows EVERYTHING about us anyway. It's kind of surreal.
Re: Sharing or Guarding personal information
I don't consider myself anonymous, mostly b/c I've met alot of people from here. Personal information as in address, phone number etc.....I give it out only if I know that person or feel comfortable with them.
Re: Sharing or Guarding personal information
I share it all. And when I say all. I mean all
Rack.
