Sharing a Bad Dream

I was advised by my elders that when you see a bad dream you are not to share this with anyone.
If you see a dream that shows a loved one in danger then you should give sadqa and pray for Allah’s protection and guidance.

To what degree is this advice supported in our deen?

Re: Sharing a Bad Dream

Here are some comments that I found that support what my elders have verbally taught me.
They are, however, unconfirmed so I would appreciate it if someone could provide some authenticated answers.

There are 3 types of dreams

1) From Allah swt.
2) From ur own mind.. i.e random dreams based on stuff thats been on ur mind
3) A dream from shaytaan.. to scare u etc etc not nice dreams

Sayidinah Abu Huraira reported that Rasulullah (sallallaahu alayhi wa sallam) said: When the time of Qiyamah gets closer, a believer’s dream can hardly be false. And the truest vision will be of one who is himself the most truthful in speech, for the dream of a Muslim is the forty-fifth part of Prophecy, and dreams are of three types: one good dream which is a sort of good tidings from Allah; the evil dream which causes pain is from the satan; and the third one is a suggestion of one’s own mind; so if any one of you sees a dream which he does not like he should stand up and offer prayer and he should not relate it to people, and he said: I would love to see fetters, but I dislike wearing of necklace, for the fetters is (an indication of) one’s steadfastness in religion. The narrator said: I do not know whether this is a part of the hadith or the words of Ibn Sirin.

Muslim: Book 29, Number 5621

Sayidinah Qatada reports that Rasulullah (sallallaahu alayhi wa sallam) said: Good dreams are from Allah and the evil dreams are from satan. If one sees a dream which one does not like, one should spit on one’s left side and seek the refuge of Allah from the satan; (spitting 3 times means to resemble the gesture of spitting, not actual spitting with a mouthful of saliva. Such a gesture will help that) it (the dream) will not do one any harm, and one should not disclose it to anyone and if one sees a good dream one should feel pleased but should not disclose it to anyone but whom one loves.(In other words, disclose it only to people that are pious, honorable, etc.)

another such reference that requires authentication:

Satan And Bad Dreams
Satan is attributed with bad dreams for these reasons:

He initiates the bad and hateful thoughts and insinuates them into people's thoughts in dream form.
He likes and approves bad dreams and evil thoughts.
Bad dreams conform with his evil nature.
His hate towards humans makes him do all that is possible to harm and frighten them - both during their sleep and their wakefulness.
Satan shows people absurd dreams which are unimaginable in real life.

A person dreamt that his throat was cut and his head fell off and rolled away. He chased after it, retrieved it and put it back in it's place. The Prophet Muhammad (pbuh) smiled and said:

"When satan makes fun of you during your sleep, do not tell people about it."

The Prophet (pbuh) discouraged people from relating dreams that appear meaningless or frightening.

Re: Sharing a Bad Dream

I've heard the same thing.

Re: Sharing a Bad Dream

Peace Muzna,

I read/ heard that a good dream is from Allah and a bad or evil dream is from Satan. The Hadiths you quoted above are correct. Also I heard that if someone see a bad dream, he/she may give sadqa. B'coz sadqa will save him/her from any misfortunates. Moreover the types of dreas u mentioned above is also correct. I remember psyah bhai also explained similar in another thread.

Re: Sharing a Bad Dream

You know I always had future events in my dreams...
I kinda always knew when some one was going to depart. Not "who".. but "some one"... like that...

I made my peace with it... I made peace with the world they live in...
Thing is if there is no after life... and the life don't continue after death... why the hell I always see one of my passed away uncle...
before some one in my family is going to INTAQAAL to world after..

Re: Sharing a Bad Dream

Its like a future event... due to some leak in system. you get know it.
But there is nothing you can do about it... So make your peace.
and love allah... he is kind and merciful.. and he the best...

Re: Sharing a Bad Dream

I shared a nightmare with a friend just recently and i'm glad I did because I got to analyze it and understand what the symbols represent in my personal life

Re: Sharing a Bad Dream

Actions to take upon having a bad dream
1) Seek Allah's protection from satan
2)Lightly spit three times, on your left side
3) Turn over and sleep facing the right hand side
Say some duas or narrate some short surats (verses) like ayat ul kursi or say Auzu billahi min ash-shaytan ir-rajim (tauaz) (I seek Allah's protection from Satan, the outcast)
4) Get up and pray
5) Avoid narrating it to anyone else
6) Avoid attempting to interpret it

Re: Sharing a Bad Dream

Thanks for the confirmations.
I also asked the imam at my masjid and he confirmed the same thing.
He also confirmed that if someone should see a bad dream/nightmare about someone else.....that they should not share it with the concerned parties. They should do what has been stated above and that is all.

Allah knows best.

Re: Sharing a Bad Dream

^ so if someone had a horrible dream about your family member, but did not tell you the details of the dream (because they know that is not advised in Islam) , but only that it was a horrible dream, you would not want to know?

Well thanks for the heads up. You could just written a PM back about this, instead of writing it in your blog and starting a thread. There is a way to teach people without making them feel inferior and feeling like they are doing something haram. Maybe you should talk to your elders and Imam about how to do this.

And please stop making assumptions on why people tell their bad dreams. Only Allah knows what it is in their heart - not you. It could be because of genuine concern and fear for that person, and not necessarily "giving credence/life to a nightmare that was created by shaitan and admitting to your own weakness in that you were unable to keep a pure mind and shaitan was able to influence it"

Re: Sharing a Bad Dream

........

I thought that re-reading your own words might help you to understand what should have happened here.

Furthermore....I sent you a pm once and you were not even gracious enough to reply so I'm not about to do it again.

Re: Sharing a Bad Dream

exactly.

read the last sentance.

Re: Sharing a Bad Dream

okay…read…

you’re welcome.

Re: Sharing a Bad Dream

u should know a PM is a PRIVATE MESSAGE. not a message that you copy your BFFs on and then message me. You should know better.

Re: Sharing a Bad Dream

you could have easily replied without copying anyone......your choice.
and about knowing better.......seriously?
hello pot? this is kettle calling.....

and for the record....nobody would have known that you had any involvement in this scenario if it weren't for your own post......nice one.
shouldn't you have known better than to post publicly? <--- rhetoric

I'm done with your pettiness.......back on ignore.

Re: Sharing a Bad Dream

if only u did ignore me and a lot of other people's issues...you wouldn't have any blog entries to write about or new threads to start.

and i was wrong. You don't know any better.

Allah de hawalay. May Allah SWT guide and help you.

Re: Sharing a Bad Dream

Peace Sister Afshi

:) May Allah (SWT) reward you for being honest ... regarding the manner and conduct of others please let them be, thank them and move on ... it is hard to do this I understand ... but for a person who is in the tariqah take such things in your stride ... try to look at their intentions - perhaps it was to share knowledge with concern for their fellow Muslim?

To note ... not all disturbing dreams are from Shaitan and sometimes dreams are worth telling a select few for reassurance. The word "bad" dreams is quite subjective ... therefore we can't always say which dream we should talk about and not ... I am trying to study dream interpretation from the books of Ibn Sirin and there are also some rules for dream interpreters ... It is true that some dreams from Shaitan are nightmares, but it is also true that some true dreams may be warnings and may appear to be disturbing yet not nightmares at all. Sometimes reassurance is needed from those who have learnt about dreams. I hope you and Muzna can excuse each other for what is obviously a misunderstanding.

Re: Sharing a Bad Dream

Jazak Allah Sidi for sharing this.

It was my concern for a fellow Muslim that started all this. But apparently they thought I was committing a sin.

and Sidi - did you ever listen to the CDs of Shaykh Muhammad Yaqoubi about dream interpretation? I've been meaning to listen to it.

Re: Sharing a Bad Dream

Peace,

If I see a bad dream about someone in my family than why would I tell him that I saw a (bad) dream where I saw u r goin to die after three days in car accident or else. In that case either I contact a qulified scholar who can interpret it correctly or I'll give sadqa for me and on behalf of him (without telling him) so that Almighty Allah saves us both from any misfortunates.

Maybe he'll believe maybe not, but all i knw that he'll be worried once he heard. So better not to disclose any dream.
