This is all talk USR!
Not a single country in the world has shown Sharia-at-work in the last 500 years or so (if not longer). The more you read the history, the more you realize that Sharia was a collection of stuff only suitable for relatively primitive tribal societies.
Fast forward to modern day, and all efforts of implementing Sharia have miserably failed. The result of such implementation has turned up much worse despotic regimes in the lands that enjoyed more prosperity without a hint of such sharia-bazi.
In fact Sharia proponents are all thriving, breeding, and running towards utterly non-Sharia countries.
So to all the proponents of the wonderful Sharia, here is a challenge. Put your money where your mouth is!
And yes Phoenix (the bird and the not the city) does exist. NOT!

Yes it is all talk because few have any idea how to walk their talk.
The point is all those study history fail to also realize that Prophet Muhammad or any of the successive Caliphs did not take and re-instate the Shariah that existed in the times of Ibrahim AS or Musa AS. You can see how drastically and progressively they applied laws during the first 4 caliphates.
Our present day moronic Shariah mongers fail miserably because they try to re-instate what existed centuries ago without any thought of progression. The underlying principles do not change but their application certainly does.
Even Allah SWT evolved his message with time and did not give the same scriptures to his Prophets to preach again and again. The underlying message never changed i.e. Tawhid and obedience to Allah SWT and to become the best of humanity but even each scripture brought guidance and instructions that were time sensitive. People today have become incapable of separating from the Quran and Sunnah what was time independent and what was time sensitive, that leads to our biggest failures.
Re: Sharia and Economy split from: Why do US officials say such things in Pakistan?
Islam itself doesn't have any problems with economic activity, as long as its ethical. Any backhanded dirty activity - and you have to face a punishment for it if caught. If not caught, doesn't matter, you get punished in the end anyway.
That's the difference between economics in non-muslim countries vs. economics in a true hypothetical Islamic state.
Yet it is true that when "shariah" is enforced, sometimes you see that economic activity lags severely behind. In Arabia, if it weren't for the oil, there wouldn't be any substantial economic opportunity other than what goes on in Makkah and Madinah during Hajj season. Another example, NWFP. It has been in MMA control for some time now, and what economic progress has it made? None.
Therefore, one should ask the question - why is there no progress when muslims come into the picture?
And the problem is that our Islamic laws do not have much detailed mention over business activity, other than the ethics in trading. Therefore, you have two types of muslims:
Muslim A: "The Quran does not say I should NOT do business, and do well at it, so.... I'm going to do business and do well at it".
Muslim B: "The Quran doesn't mention anything much about business, therefore, it is best I stay away from it, lest I sin. My mullah advisor taught me
When you have type B's controlling state, you have economic stagnation
When you have type A's controlling the state, you don't.

Very true.
