So I was just talking to my bf and she is going the cloth diaper route.. any of you used cloth diapers…what were the pros, what were the cons u faced…

and for those of you who did some research on cloth versus disposable…what made you choose what you chose…

I have come across a lot of these discussions on baby center but wanted to get some insight from desis living in north america or even other countries…

my mom used to use cloth diapers at home for us kids…she says it also gets kids toilet trained quicker…

Re: Share your views in detail...and your experiences

I am using diapers for my daughter. Because it saves me alot of time and my daughter feels comfortable in it.

She is 5 months now masha allah and hasn't got diaper rash even once .

It's the hygiene that matters if you can maintain with cloth nappy you can opt for it. But right after giving birth I doub't you will have so much of time in your hands to was nappies everyday.

I don't agree with toilet training I have seen babies being trained very well who used diapers . It's just a myth.

Re: Share your views in detail...and your experiences

automne77 - the two biggest reasons people use cloth diapers are

  1. Cost - since you can reuse - there is a one time cost
  2. Environment Friendly - An estimated 27.4 billion disposable diapers are used each year in the US, resulting in a possible 3.4 million tons of used diapers adding to landfills each year.

But honestly that is one green thing that I just could not do. I'll take a 3 minute shower, use less cleaning chemicals, avoid heating and electricity waste, walk to work but honestly that is one sacrifice I cannot make for the planet.

There are services that deliver, haul & clean cloth diapers. Their fees vary by location and is somewhere between $50 - $100 a month.

We didn't use them and (I, at least) feel guilty about it.

Re: Share your views in detail...and your experiences

My son use it for few months then we stop. Why? I got tired to do the extra cleaning. My husband told me if I want to help the world I too need to used cloth napkin for my period. Blah!! :(

Now he is 2 yrs and fully potty trained - :)

^Tampons! Biodegradable.

Err, I just want all you mommies to feel good about all the work you put in for the kids. It is clearly not an easy job! Kudos to you for doing it, and doing it well!

Same here.

Sorry, world :(

Re: Share your views in detail...and your experiences

Funny!! I was going to post a discussion on cloth diapers too.... have been thinking about using them for my next child :D

Actually, that's not bad given the cost of diapers. Thought it would be much more expensive.

We've gone the pampers route so far.

Don't cloth diapers leak?

Re: Share your views in detail...and your experiences

One of my friends is looking into cloth diapers for her baby, she found a service that picks them up daily from your house for cleaning, I think its $25/week

Re: Share your views in detail...and your experiences

The initial cost of these leak-proof cloth diapers is kind of steep, no? $200-300.

And then the whole scraping the poopy ones, washing/drying, extra detergent, electricity bills going up, etc... so the cost is kind of high.... I want to know if its really worth it.

Re: Share your views in detail...and your experiences

this is one thing I just wont be able to do.
