share your recipe for making.......

Dahi Baray. I’m craving dahi baray but don’t know how to make them, especially the baray part
Someone Please share with me an easy recipe to make them so I can fulfill the craving I’m having :chusni:

I miss Paki land :crying:

Thanks.

Re: share your recipe for making.......

soak the daal overnight. Next morning add a bit of salt, some zeera, a pinhc of baking soda and garlic to the drained daal and grind to a fine paste. Deep fry the paste dropping it in the oil with ur hands instead of a spoon. That makes them turn out rounder. Once fried to a golden brown take them out of the frying pan and put in cold water. Leave for a few mins and drain out water by squeezing between ur palms. Now add some milk to yoghurt to thin it out a bit but not too much. Add some salt (and sugar if u want them sweet/salt) and add the baraas. sprinkle with chaat masala. Absolutely yum.

Won;t help u satisfy ur craving right now but if u can't wait till tomorrow than just go and buy them.

Re: share your recipe for making.......

you can make the besan ones which will be fast and easy - ready in max an hour. make besan pakoras (or bakoras if you are Arabic) and put them in a pot of water to soften them for 5-10 minutes. Then squeeze out the water and dump them in your yougurt mixture.

For the daal ones you will have to wait overnight;-)

Re: share your recipe for making…

Yep besan works too. But once u have had nice daal ones its tough to go back to the besan ones. Baaji’s M-I-L makes divine dahi balaa’s I tell you and thats her recipe :yummy:

Re: share your recipe for making…

thank you both FF and RukhsarBB for sharing. Now i’m confused whether to make daal kay ya besan kai baray??? Do the two differ in taste alot.
FF, which daal should I soak if i decide to make the daal barays? please mention the color too:D
I wish i could go buy them BUT they don’t sell anywhere near I live… the nearest i can think of is NY, Jackson Heights, why didn’t I eat them when I was in jackson heights a few days ago :crying:
RushsarBB, the besan barays sound really easy to make, i might go make them…I just hope i have besan now:O

Re: share your recipe for making.......

Your lucky Faryat cos the colour is all I know :D the white one. I have no clue what the name is.

Re: share your recipe for making.......

FF, I think knowing the color was the main thing :D

I guess I'm not the only one that's bad with daal names afterall :P

Do you mind sharing your baji's mil recipe cuz i'm thinking of making the daal barays even though they require some work but when I think of it I haven't made dahi baray in three yrs of my marriage knowing my hubby would love if i did and besides now is a good time since i'm craving them too :)

Re: share your recipe for making.......

sigh i miss pakistan too.........

u can get those shan packet mixes thingies and make em according to the directions that are on the box...

Re: share your recipe for making…

That menaing the recipe I posted above:hoonh:

Re: share your recipe for making.......

We make them using Femmes recipe but we use maash ki daal and chana daal, a ration of 3 parts maash to 1 part chana daal. Soak for a few hours, doesnt have to be overnight. Grind into a paste with some ginger, green chilli, salt. Add a pinch of baking soda to the paste but dont add too much. Fry until golden. Soak in hot water for a few mins. Squeeze the water out and put in dahi.

to make dahi, beat some dahi with a bit of milk instead of water, add salt, black mirch, imli chutney, green chutney and some dahi bara masala (the shaan kind). Add the dahi baras to this and enjoy.

Re: share your recipe for making…

Easy Dahi Bhalle…

Re: share your recipe for making…

mom makes daal ones majority of the time but for those instant cravings the besan ones suffice :~D

Re: share your recipe for making…

ohh and Femme can you please post your baji’s MIL recipe… lol

Re: share your recipe for making.......

why do some ppl call it dhai bhale and others dahi baray?!?!

by the way, is it only me who adds tomatoes, boiled potatoes, and onions in dahi as well or someone else does that too?!?

Re: share your recipe for making…

Gia: I also add tomatoes, boiled potatoes and onions in my dahi as well. :yummy:

Re: share your recipe for making.......

haha roshi

GTG I was thinking about the dahi baray dahi balay too. Honestly I don;t even know which one is correct. I just call it whatever comes to my mind first :D

Re: share your recipe for making…

lolz.. that is what we normally say at home.. white daal, yellow daal, pink daal..:D… anyhow the white daal is mash kee daal. and yes with mash kee daal all you need to do is seasoning, no baking soda, no other daal or basan. You don’t even need to measure it so i guess it is the most easiest and yumiest one.

Re: share your recipe for making…

yup i also love adding tomatoes, onion, cucumber, boiled potatoes and it is really refreshing (and healthy too) if you eat them in afternoon at summer.
