Share your knowledge of cricket terminology

Re: Share your knowledge of cricket terminology

Good job. NOw define “flick”?

Re: Share your knowledge of cricket terminology

No, pull shots only played toward mid-wicket/leg region.

Re: Share your knowledge of cricket terminology

Hmmm.. I thought you just said that if someone goes on the back foot and plays the ball high on the mid-on, that will be called a “pull”??

Re: Share your knowledge of cricket terminology

hook (and how is different from pull)
leg cutter.
leg break (and how its different from normal leg spin).

^^

  1. Pull: this shot is usually played of a short ball (assesment and technique used by players are different) and towards the leg-side, the region involved is from (wide Mid-on to Mid-wicket), if you want to watch the best exponent is Kevin Pietersen from the ODI series Pak vs Eng. sadly he is injured, Razzaq usually plays in the air and Ricky Ponting.

  2. Drive: drive is played along the ground (front foot or backfoot), and the region involved are from (off-side) extra cover, cover, long-off and from (leg-side) Mid-on, Mid-wicket and square leg (usually known as “flick towards square leg”) players to watch for this shot are: M. Yousef (very classy) and Kamran Akmal. and Saeed Anwar.

  3. Cut: this shot is enforced on the off-side, on the square region; Point to wide 3rd man area off the back-foot, Players who execute this shot: Saeed Anwar, currently Butt, Inzi.

  4. Hook: This shot is played on the leg side off the back-foot,
region is from fine-leg to square leg, the ideal height of the ball is around the batsman chest - shoulder area, Sadly IMO there is no Pakistani player who plays this shot with authority, if you want to see this shot’s wonderful execution you may wanna watch Ricky Ponting. (He is the best)

5)leg cutter: this kind of ball is not bowled alot nower days by a bowler, the latest example and the only leg cutter bowled so far was by Razzaq before he bowled M. Prior. usually the fast bowler rolls his finger off the seam towards the slip and the ball moves from the leg side to the off side of a right-handed batsman, notice it doesnt swing rather moves off the pitch. The best bowler to bowl such a delivery was from W.I; C. Ambrose and Walsh.

  1. leg spin/ leg break: its the same thing, experts of this art Dani, Warne, Afridi.

Re: Share your knowledge of cricket terminology

A flick is a shot that you play between midwicket to square leg region by picking up overpich or slighter fuller length ball around your leg

Re: Share your knowledge of cricket terminology

I have noticed a lot of batsmen, flick by being on the backfoot and picking the ball at waist high on the leg side.

Re: Share your knowledge of cricket terminology

Flick: when a batsman hits a ball from above ankle and below knee region (pitched towards leg-side) and plays it towards fine-leg region and the bat’s initial position is around shoulder height (playing across line).

Re: Share your knowledge of cricket terminology

^ Flick is around shoulder height?????

Re: Share your knowledge of cricket terminology

It can be played at back foot.. Azhar used to play it a lot. If ball is more fuller in length you can play flick by going on back fooot and opening up a bit to legside.

If ball is at waste hight then it is not flick.it is something else…

Re: Share your knowledge of cricket terminology

okay, may be I’m using incorrect term, when I said “mid-wicket” I meant mid-on (not the off-side).

PS: I just checked the definitions of field AREAS, and it turns out that the areas I meant to refer for hook and pull are sweeper (leg side) to fine leg.

Re: Share your knowledge of cricket terminology

bhai jee… note: bat’s initial position is around shoulder, not ball’s position

Re: Share your knowledge of cricket terminology

that is more likely a pull shot.

Re: Share your knowledge of cricket terminology

^ This is what I think too. Bat’s initial position at shoulder height is a surprise for me.

Re: Share your knowledge of cricket terminology

That’s called a Viv’er. Let’s not try to define Viv’s shots. We will have to create a new cricket dictionary for that.

Re: Share your knowledge of cricket terminology

^ Afridi plays it as well. Same result. A fraction of the grace.
