You should retire when people ask you " why?" Rather than " why not?"

Re: Share some good Philosophy Quotes

With or without religion, you would have good people doing good things and evil people doing evil things. But for good people to do evil things, that takes religion. Religion is wickedness sanctioned through a holy book.

Just got this from someone.

Re: Share some good Philosophy Quotes

wickedness and evil sanctioned by holy books? wow. That's the first. Now show me the beef. Will ya?

Re: Share some good Philosophy Quotes

It was something I ran across. Not my quote. But something to think about, IMO.

I don't understand show me the beef comment. Please splain.

Re: Share some good Philosophy Quotes

It's a half truth. The writer didn't think it through. (Is it by Imran Khan? :) )
Sometimes for evil people to do good things, that takes religion as well.

Every religion has several aspects. Now it is up to the holy men to lead people on the aspects they want to disseminate among people. If good people start doing evil things then I think such holy people are responsible more than the religion itself.

Re: Share some good Philosophy Quotes

This quote is from Richard Dawkins I believe. (Unless he got it from someone else..)

Re: Share some good Philosophy Quotes

He means things like killing the infidel etc, finds sanction in holy books. Its why many people venerate the assassin of Salman Taseer. The act itself was evil, however, some will find justification for it through their holy book, and so an evil act is thus sanctioned.

One could quite easily twist religious text to justify anything, and so an evil act is thus no longer seen to be an evil act.

On the subject of religion...
“He gave me heaven and earth, and assumed I'd be satisfied;
Actually I was too embarrassed to argue."

Re: Share some good Philosophy Quotes

And on the other hand evil people find ways to kill religious people also.

Evil people do what they want to do. No fault of religion.

Re: Share some good Philosophy Quotes

Yeah, but when a so called evil person kills an innocent 'believer," and his actions aren't guided by religious conviction, then everyone is still convinced the murderer is evil. His actions are not justifiable.
On the other hand, if the same person killed a "believer" and claimed his actions we're in accordance with religious obligations, then people could find justification for those actions through their faith.

That religion was the motivating factor means that his act is no longer considered evil, but rather an obligation of a pious Muslim.

Religion can be used to justify evil. And evil people like Mumtaz Qadri, are no longer evil but instead are considered hero's.

Re: Share some good Philosophy Quotes

Still: Evil people do what they want to do. No fault of religion.

Re: Share some good Philosophy Quotes

I would contend organizations such as RSS use religion to propogate hate. The quote was provided in that context. I have no doubt reasonable people can find similar examples elsewhere.

Re: Share some good Philosophy Quotes

Again, an evil person is not considered evil if religion is used to give him/her cover. If your religion tells you that Salam taseer deserves death, then evil people like Qadri are no longer considered evil, they are considered heros. And if your religion tells you that Malala Yousufzai deserved a bullet to the head, then the Taliban are also heros not evil.

Evil person is only evil because other people call him that. If others deem his act as heroic, and not evil, then he is not evil. Very simple concept here.

Example. I consider Mumtaz Qadri a horribly evil person who deserves the death penalty, where as many people who agree with him consider him a hero because according to them, his actions were in accordance with Islam. So Islam in that sense, gives cover to murder.

Re: Share some good Philosophy Quotes

Wrong.

I wrote twice and you did not get it despite writing yourself “according to them”.

You believe bad people, that is YOUR problem. :chai:

Re: Share some good Philosophy Quotes
