Shalwar Kameez

shalwar kameez or shalwar qameez is a traditional dress worn by both women and men in South Asia. Salwar Qameez is in fact the National Dress of Pakistan adorned by both men and women due to its comfort and casual nature.[1] Salvars or shalvars are loose pajama-like trousers. The legs are wide at the top, and narrow at the bottom. The kameez is a long shirt or tunic. The side seams (known as the chaak) are left open below the waist-line, which gives the wearer greater freedom of movement. In Afghanistan and Pakistan, the garment is worn by both sexes[citation needed]. In Bangladesh, India and Sri Lanka, it is most commonly a woman’s garment, albeit still worn by some men

Re: Shalwar Kameez

ok... and?

did i miss the point?? i keep reading it over

Re: Shalwar Kameez

Shalwars are gathered at the waist and held up by a drawstring. The kameez is usually cut straight and flat; older kameez use traditional cuts modern kameez are more likely to have European-inspired set-in sleeves. The tailor's taste and skill are usually displayed not in the overall cut, but in the shape of the neckline and the decoration of the kameez.
When women wear the salwar kameez, they usually wear a long scarf or shawl called a dupatta around the head or neck. For Muslim women, the dupatta is a less stringent alternative to the chador or burqa (see hijab and purdah). For Sikh and Hindu women (especially those from northern India, where the salwar kameez is most popular), the dupatta is useful when the head must be covered, as in a Gurdwara or a Temple, or the presence of elders. For other women, the dupatta is simply a stylish accessory that can be worn over one shoulder or draped around the chest and over both shoulders.

Re: Shalwar Kameez

someone lock this thread plz ..... or ppl will keep coming and wasting their time.

my observation

in pakistan we wear arabic pants kinda shalwar.
in india they wear skinny jeans kinda chooridar pajama.

in pakistan, women used to and still many go with covering the entire thign.
in india, they usually wear deep galas. (sikh women dont)

in india, sri lanka, bangladesh, after marriage many women only wear sari.
in india, if men wear traidional dress then they dont wear same shalwar as pakistani men do. it either chooridar or langoot kinda.

Re: Shalwar Kameez

Churidars, or more properly churidar pyjamas, are tightly fitting trousers worn by both men and women in South Asia and Central Asia. They are a variant of the common salwar pants. Salwars are cut wide at the top and narrow at the ankle. Churidars narrow more quickly, so that contours of the leg are revealed. They are usually cut on the bias (at a 45 degree angle to the grain of the fabric) which makes them naturally stretchy. Stretch is important when pants are closefitting. They are also cut longer than the leg and finish with a tightly fitting buttoned cuff at the ankle. The excess length falls into folds and appears like a set of bangles resting on the ankle (hence 'churidar'; 'churi': bangle, 'dar': like). When the wearer is sitting, the extra material is the "ease" that makes it possible to bend the legs and sit comfortably. The word "churidar" is from Hindi and made its way into English only in the 20th century.[1] Earlier, tight fitting churidar-like pants worn in in India were referred to by the British as Moghul breeches, long-drawers, or mosquito drawers.

Re: Shalwar Kameez

You forgot to write that it originated from Central Asia.

Re: Shalwar Kameez

wtf is this thread about?

Re: Shalwar Kameez

I've always wondered about the Islamic rule whereby some desi men say women shouldn't wear jeans/trousers cos it's imitating men's clothes but wearing shalwar khameez is ok seeing as tho it is also practically the same sort of garment for both sexes?

Re: Shalwar Kameez

[note] Ali Usman, I understand the relationship of this thread to culture, but is this just a "for your information" type of thread or do you have a point that requires discussion or clarification? [/note]

Re: Shalwar Kameez

If it wasn’t for Ali Usman, I’d never have known the true meaning of shalwar kameez. :halo:

Re: Shalwar Kameez

Shalwar Kameez is a good dress but some people has inferiority complex, so they avoid it.

Re: Shalwar Kameez

?
and the point being?

You're teacher told your class to write a piece about shalwark kameez and your testing it here to see if you've written enough about it?

I stopped wearing mine, by the way. Rarely wear it nowadays.

I don't think people avoid it because of a complex. You can't really wear shalwar qameez at business meetings now, can you? Even in Pakistan. It's a global economy now and we deal with people from all countries with professionalism. The extreme comfort of a shalwar qameez can take that professionalism from your conduct at the workplace.

Lol!

Re: Shalwar Kameez

A dupatta is traditionally worn across both shoulders. However, the dupatta can also be worn like a cape around the entire torso. The material for the dupatta varies according to the suit: cotton, georgette, silk, chiffon, and more.
There are various modes of wearing an unsewn dupatta. When not draped over the head in the traditional style, it is usually worn with the middle portion of the dupatta resting on the chest like a garland with both ends thrown over each respective shoulder. When the dupatta is worn along with the salwar-kameez it is casually allowed to flow down the front and back.
