Re: Shall India break off relations with Israel

My personal view is that Isreal has gone too far with this. Innocents are being killed and giving more ammunition to Hezb and its ilk to recruite more into their ranks. Isreal should have just made a point and withdrawn. Unless Isreal is planning to occupy whole of south Lebonon and for a long time, isrealies cannot live in peace in their territory. I doubt wheather Isrealies would want to occupy southern lebenon for an extended period.
Coming to the topic in hand. India as such cant be seen as against isreal. may be will support an UN resolution against isreal, but i dont think there is any chance of such resolution getting passed with American Veto. Indian UN peace keeping force is already in Southern lebenon. If there is a mandate and if somehow Lebonon decided to disarm Hezb, then India should actively participate in peace keeping operation in southern lebonon or help in disarming Hezb and keeping peace in the border..

Re: Shall India break off relations with Israel

Eventhough Muslim League was formed in 1906, largely to safeguard the interests of the Muslim landowners, its grass roots vision for a separate country did not came into fruition till the mid-late thirties, after decades of dealing with inherent hindu hatred and actions against muslims...

Re: Shall India break off relations with Israel

right....and also disband hizbollah and they should join regular lebanese army (which i doubt it is going to happen).....it should have been done much before. and no severing of ties with any country

Re: Shall India break off relations with Israel

Guys, the discussion here is about Israel and India.... not about Muslims / Hindus in India.

Re: Shall India break off relations with Israel

When some Arab countries have maintained diplomatic relations with Israel then how India can justify the break of ties from Israel. This is the kind of logic put forth in India when ever calls to break the ties with Israel comes up.

The leftist mostly make such calls while pro BJP elements want to strengthen the ties with Israel. Congress party and most of the Indians maintain a neutral stand. So in all probabilities the status quo will remain. The ties with Israel will neither improve nor deteriorate as long as current govt is in power.

Re: Shall India break off relations with Israel

The real diplomatic intention of opening and maintaining fair relationship by India with Israel was to gain a preferential treatment from U.S. vis a vis Pakistan. But this has so far not worked since U.S. doesn't want to be seen partial towards either of the country since it considers Pakistan stretegically important in the region. Indian diplomats still hope that some day U.S. would tilt more towards India by having a fairly good relationship with Israel. But India cannot further strengthen relationship with Israel since Indian politicians cannot ignore powerful 15% muslim vote and another 20% leftist vote. So 35% vote bank (which is not BJP's vote bank) is a powerful detriment to further strengthen the relationship with Israel.

Recent weakening of relationship with Iran was another diplomatic strategy to gain some preference from U.S. over Pakistan. This eventually resulted in a preferential nuclear deal with U.S.

In all probabilities, India will not weaken its relationship with Isreal because of its long term diplomatic goal of getting preferential treatment from U.S. vis a vis Pakistan.

Re: Shall India break off relations with Israel

Its unfair to say that India started to have deplomatic ties with Isreal just because it wants favours from US.
American finances are run by big corporates and they would have to take note of India and favour India. I dont think Isreal plays a role in financial backing. For a developing country like India finances plays a major role in the countries strength.
Militarily US might be able to push in some weapons to India through Isreal without having to go through congress. But i havent seen so much coperation between the two states except for the radar deal. Hopefully it improves.
Isrealies are hard working people and they are intelligent as well. It serves indias best interest to have ties with them in the long run. It need not be by being too much supportive of their military action though, but by improving scientific and economic co-operation between the two countries.

This whole thing reminds me about this "Aik se barh kar aik zaleel....India, America, Israel:D . I used to see this written on the walls of our school long time ago
