Shakar qandi

Husband wants me to make that tomorrow. I believe it’s sweet potato with chaat masala.. I’ve never had it. I looked for it in the shops but all I saw were yams. Interchangeable? Any tips/recipes/etc?

Re: Shakar qandi

shakarqand is same as yam…the red/purple ones, from the Caribbean, are better in taste and has less fibres. the white ones aren’t that good and are quite fibrous.

if you can make a trip to Indian/Pakistani store, you can buy the best shakarqand imported from either India or Pakistan.

my Bhabhi makes shakarqand kii kheer and i make shakarqand fries. yummy!

Re: Shakar qandi

Shakar qandi = sweet potatoes. Have you looked at the desi grocery stores?

Simplest way to make it is, wash them, wrap them in aluminum foil, stick them in the oven. After half an hour, poke them with knife to see if it’s tender. And stick it back if it’s necessary. When it’s done, take it out, peel and cut and sprinkle chat masala. It retains it’s sweetness, and its yummy.

Re: Shakar qandi

boil it then peel and eat with toothpicks and chat masala (pure desi style)

Re: Shakar qandi

^ and some khatttttaaaa orange juice from semi-ripened fruit (lime jice never gives the same effect)

Re: Shakar qandi

also baked tastes better than boiled !!

Re: Shakar qandi

Yes…!
I still remember the one they used to sell outside schools in winters. My parents never wanted us to eat that but we still sometimes did…:hehe:.It was roasted in sand I think and the juice from the ‘khatti’ (semi ripened oranges) made it so yummy.

Re: Shakar qandi

You can bake it…or bbq… or make kheer of it…all are yummy.

Re: Shakar qandi

Its v simple. Peel and chop sweet potato(preferably not the fibrous one) into small cubes. Put it in milk and boil for a few hours, stirring occasionally. You can use the hand processor to blend it in well or the back of your spoon(if pcs of sweet potato haven’t blended with milk..usually they blend in themselves after a few hrs of boiling) Then put a can of sweetened condensed milk or sugar. Sweetened condensed milk in kheer tastes better than just plain sugar. You can adjust the sweetness acc to your liking. Then serve.

Served cold or chilled tastes yummier than if served hot.

PS: you can put in chopped nuts or grated coconut if you like..I like sweet potato kheer without these things.

Lol :hehe:

Re: Shakar qandi

The chaat masala one is which Sehar suggested. Baked is yummier than boiled and bbq’ed is even more delicious.

Re: Shakar qandi

i just made it today. first time eating it, and it was yummy!

washed it and then chopped into cubes about equal size. added 1 teaspoon normal oil, 1 tablespoon salt, red chilli powder, and chaat masala. 1 whole lemon. baked it for 20 minutes. it was all crispy and tender from the inside. really delicious, and will try it again.
