my mother and khala both have 1 each, it was kept by my nani (who was kashmiri) for their shadi. It was indeed the most beatiful fabric I have ever touched in my life you can literally squeeze the whole shawl in your hands.

aren't they illegal? i remember watching a documentary on it recently....how shop owners try to sell fake ones as well as real ones. they got busted- fined and jailed.

yes i do, brought it many years ago (10 years in fact) it cost me 22000 PKR i brought it from a private seller, and she took her ring off and pulled the whole thing through it, and said its only genuine if you can do that, otherwise its fake.

nabz it has been illegal since 1979...my moms is almost almost 40 years old, so when she started looking around a shawl for me back in early 2000s (it is tradation her maternal family followed for centuries to have shahtush shalws for brides) thats when she found out that the price has gone through the roof and it is illegal to buy so she never got me one :( I use hers if I want to lakin obviously 40 years took some toll on the embriodry and frequent use.

exactly what clothesmad said !! I asked at a shop where me friend got it from few months back and he told they come in percentages according to the amount of animal fur used. 20% wali was over 25000rs for a plain shawl. He told they hide and squeeze upto 2 shawls in fists when they 'smuggle' them from india. I felt like I was listening to something related to a mafia.
