ISLAMABAD: Dr Shahid Masood will resign as Managing Director Pakistan Television (PTV) within the next 72 hours, according to sources in the Ministry of Information. The resignation follows deepening tensions with Federal Minister for Information and Broadcasting Sherry Rehman, whose writ he has constantly flouted since Day-One. The straw that broke the camel’s back was his refusal to reinstate Shahid Nadeem, the Deputy MD, appointed by Ms Rehman, and fired by him, despite orders by the Prime Minister’s Secretariat to reinstate him. I think he really does have a vision to being back ptv’s lost prestige. Most of the anchors you see now are products of ptv, they’ve all been trained there, Talat hussain, Kashif Abbasi, Waheed Hussain etc. He is a thorn in sherr rehmans side who wants the ptv to be her tool or mouth piece. Although i think maybe masood will try his luck and be a pest and stay there, which i hope he does because PTV does have a great deal of potential still.

ISLAMABAD: The ongoing tug of war between Information Minister Sherry Rehman and MD PTV Dr Shahid Masood took a new twist on Tuesday when the minister restored the Deputy Managing Director (DMD) who was sacked by the sitting chairman PTV.

However, the notification issued by the director administration on orders of information minister were immediately cancelled by the PTV chairman-cum-MD.Interestingly, the removal of the previous DMD was challenged in the court and today (Friday) was an important hearing of the case. Without waiting for the court’s decision the PTV headquarters’ building witnessed a rare show of power Thursday when the information minister ordered the PTV Director Administration Asad Ahmad Jaspaal to restore the former DMD who was asked to immediately assume the charge of his office.

The said order was issued by incumbent PTV Chairman Dr Shahid Masood to sack the then DMD Shahid on charges of poor performance. After the removal of DMD by the chairman, the information ministry got his sacking orders cancelled by the prime minister’s office.

The PM office orders were not accepted by the PTV MD on the grounds that according to rules and regulation any appointment or removal from the PTV could only be made by the chairman/MD. Former DMD took the issue to the court where it would be heard on Friday.

According to sources in PTV, on Thursday in the afternoon federal information minister came for the first time to PTV headquarters after assuming her charge as the minister. She went in her office situated in the PTV building and called the director administration. The director administration issued orders on the instructions of the information minister but told her that signatures of PTV chairman were necessary on the orders. She asked him to go to the chairman office and get the signatures, but the chairman refused to do so. On this the minister called the sitting DMD Mustafa Mandokhel and told her that she was appointing Shahid Nadeem as PTV DMD in compliance with some court orders and orders of the prime minister, Mandokhel told The News.

Then Shahid Mehmood, who was accompanying the federal minister, went to the office of DMD and nameplate of Mustafa Mandokel was removed. After these developments, according to sources, Chairman PTV took serious notice of the incident and immediately cancelled the orders issued by the director administration. Subsequently, Mandokhel again took possession of his office at about 9:30 pm Thursday.

Federal Information Minister Sherry Rehman when approached by The News refused to make any comment on the issue saying that it was below her dignity to speak on the actions of a government employee. However, sources in Information Ministry told The News that only the prime minister could appoint or remove MD PTV or DMD PTV and that Chairman/MD PTV had no authority to do so.

A senior official told The News that Thursday’s action of the information minister was in fact taken in bid to act upon the orders of the Prime Minister Secretariat. The official said that information minister, who is immediate boss of Dr Shahid Masood, was angry with the PTV chairman as he visited different countries without her permission which according to law was mandatory. Official also said that chairman/MD PTV had sent different letters/reminders for compliance of PM orders but neither was any letter responded nor was the desired action taken.The chairman PTV, when asked for his comments said that he would never allow anything illegal in the state-owned media channel until he held the position.

I think Shahid Masood should have been fired earlier. Some people say that he deliberately bungled two live addresses on TV by both president and prime minister.

Pak president’s ‘recorded’ speech shown live by PTV

Pakistan President Asif Ali Zardari on Sunday ordered an inquiry into the mess created by state-run Pakistan Television (PTV) during his address to the nation after the suicide attack outside Marriott Hotel in Islamabad that claimed 53 lives and injured over 250 people on Sept 20, Pakistan daily Dawn reported. Pakistan’s Minister of Information has been told to initiate an inquiry into the incident by the Pakistan president, who is leaving for the US to attend the UN General Assembly session, the Pakistan daily has learnt. Following the orders of the president, the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting has constituted a team to investigate the matter.

PTV Chairman & MD, Dr Shahid Masood, who was to accompany Zardari on his US visit was ordered to stay back in Pakistan till the inquiry into the incident was completed, according to the Dawn .

When contacted by Dawn reporters, Acting Secretary of Information Ministry, A S Abbasi, confirmed that a high-level committee has been constituted to investigate the matter. “The committee would be submitting its report to the authorities when the president returns from New York later this week,” Abbasi said.

According to the newspaper’s sources, soon after the Pakistan president decided to address the nation after the attack on the Marriott hotel, the Information Ministry directed the PTV authorities to make arrangements for the speech.

After the PTV team reached the Pakistan president’s residence, it was decided that the speech would be recorded rather than broadcast live and clear instructions were provided to the PTV chief to organize recording equipment accordingly, Dawn’s sources added.

After approving the draft of the address, the President, as a part of the routine exercise, took a few minutes to rehearse the speech. The PTV cameras and recording systems were activated to monitor the rehearsal.

However, what was conveyed to Zardari as a ‘recording’ of the rehearsal was actually the live broadcast of the rehearsal. The Pakistan president’s rehearsal was telecast live by PTV and this live feed was picked by two other private networks. Dr Shahid Masood was present on the scene throughout the episode, Dawn’s

Dr Shahid Masood, a failed medical doctor turned anchor, was appointed in early July as Chairman PTV , a post normally held by Secretary Information. This is his performance record of his three weeks in office.

  1. He attends a cordial welcome held by MD PTV Yousaf Baig Mirza, assuring every one of his brotherly relations with the MD. Ten minutes later, he has YBM sacked and takes over additional charge of MD PTV.

  2. The Ministry of Information (led by PPP Government’s most powerful Minister Sherry Rehman) tamely gives in to his Unilateral Declaration of Independence.

  3. He declares at his first official meeting with working directors, that he is a rightist and has been a senior member of Islami Jamiat-i-Tulba. His colleagues disclose that ex-ISI Chief and Taliban supporter General Hameed Gul is his ideal.

  4. He announces that the PTV Board of Directors will be dissolved and a new independent Board constituted. (Nothing is heard of it later!).

  5. King Masood issues orders for Rs 100,000 per month increase for the Director News Sarwar Munir Rao, who is also given the additional charge of Director Current Affairs.

  6. Orders Rs 50,000 pm allowance for PRO Suhail Bukhari, on his 4th day in office.

  7. He orders that five new directors be appointed with immediate effect. Director Administration is directed to issue orders there and then.

  8. Foreign correspondents are invited to PTV and subjected to a long speech by the King SM about his exploits in ARY and Geo and his meeting with President Musharraf. The correspondents have a good laugh. He claims to have built the News City in Chaghi Studio, although it was built several months ago.

  9. He decides to hold audience for diplomats and subjects them to his long speeches about himself. Once two ambassadors are called at the same time causing great embarrassment for both PTV and the honourable guests. He serves the ambassadors with KFC chicken pieces with forks and knives!

  10. He shocks every one by keeping two visiting cards: a PTV card and a Geo card and presents them to the visitors.

  11. He decides to keep the portfolio of Director Marketing along with the powers of the Chairman and MD.

  12. He graciously decides to grant a pay package to the union worth Rs 700 millions although the Finance and Sales directors plead that they don’t have the funds and the budget will go into a huge deficit. The union in return shouts Hail King Masood slogans when the Prime Minister visits the PTV Centre for his address to the nation.

  13. He appoints KPMG as auditors to check PTV’s financial position (to blackmail his predecessor) and leaks the story to the press. However he sends the auditors back after a secret dinner meeting with ex MD Yousaf Baig Mirza. The KPMG has to be paid Rs 1 million as per the contract nevertheless.

  14. He claims that he is bugging telephones of all key staff.

  15. He develops a great liking for all favourites of ex Chairman and MD and offers them new shows and bigger pay packages.

  16. A dinner in his honour is held by Abdullah Kadwani (head of ARY Digital) in Karachi . President Musharraf arrives unannounced !

  17. He orders wind up of Benazir Birthday exhibition prematurely.

  18. He stops News & Current Affairs Division from producing special programmes marking anniversary of Zia’s coup on 5th July. On protests, he allows some discussion programmes only.

  19. He calls Director General Pakistan Broadcasting Corporation for a meeting and does not turn up. DG PBC protests to the Ministry.

  20. He receives Mir Shakeel and Mir Ibrahim of Geo in PTV HQs for one to one meetings.

  21. He asks PTV to pay for 42 newspapers and over a dozen magazines for his house. PTV also pays for his long stay at a suite of Marriot Hotel. A Rs 600,000 generator is bought by PTV for his house.

  22. It is disclosed that he is paid an amount of Rs 30, 00,000 pm besides his Rs 800,000 salary.

  23. He plays havoc with the PTV screen by abruptly changing PTV News screen colours several times.

  24. He refuses to attend Media Chiefs meeting held to discuss PMs maiden address to the nation (to be recorded at PTV) and his all-important visit to the US .

  25. He abstains from Information Minister’s meeting at PTV News to discuss arrangements for PM’s address on 19 July afternoon.

  26. Secretary Information and Press Secretary visit the Centre and are told that Chairman/MD sahib is ‘resting’ in his office. As a result proper arrangements are not made for the PM’s speech.

  27. He mysteriously disappears from the Studio and Control Room during the PM’s live speech and suddenly a technical mishap occurs and the speech is interrupted for a couple of minutes.

  28. He calls his staff to issue a letter of termination of Shahid Nadeem, DMD at 1.30 am on Sunday night and the news is run on Express TV around 1 am. Next day, he appears on Aaj TV’s ‘Bolta Pakistan ‘ and claims that the DMD was in charge of the whole affair (a plain lie!). He makes fun of the Information Ministry, the PM’s Staff and PM’s speech on the programme.

  29. He decides to run on PTV a programme he used to anchor on Geo TV and orders extensive publicity with shots of Mohtarma Benazir Bhutto inserted in the promos. He claims that he has sensitive information of Mohtarma’s and Mr Zardari’s secret meetings with President Musharraf and the C-in-C and that is the secret of his hold over the PPP leadership.

^^ U mean Before Shahid Masood, every thing was fine and the state-run media had no issues whats so ever? and none of the MD/Chairman have abused power or done any corruption or shown any disagreement with the Information Ministry?

Keeping all other things aside, Shahid Masood deliberately broadcast Zardari's address live when he was clearly told that it would be a recorded event.
I don't like Zaradri either, so I can understand people disagreeing with him, but what he did was malicious, mean-spirited and immoral. It shows what a little man he is.

We Pakistanis need to learn how to disagree.

Boss the alegation posted in this topic are not uncommon, infact anyone who is not guilty of these might have to get his head checked.

So, the basic problem is, the minister of Information want to reinstate someon, while the chairman/MD is opposing it.. thats all i see...

It seems he finally resigned from PTV MD/Chairmanship and appointed as special Advisor to Prime Minister now.

Just wondering why he continues to follow this govt as he openly says he would not allow any illegal activities.

dr shahid masood is a qualified surgeon.what a pity he wasted his degree to become a tv anchor. and he isn't even a skilled journalist he's just a tv anchor.strange how he got appointed as a chairman PTV without any qualification in this field.
