Shahid Afridi's interview to dawn creating furore in India

This interview has created controvery back in India as well as cricketing world -

This is what dawn says - http://www.dawn.com/2011/03/28/afridi-accuses-indian-media-of-negative-campaign.html

KARACHI: Pakistan captain Shahid Afridi accused the Indian media on Monday of conducting a negative campaign against his team before Wednesday’s eagerly anticpated World Cup semi-final in Mohali.

“There is so much negativity in the Indian media. There is nothing positive to watch on the channels and we are just sticking together as a team and it is just the hotel and ground for us,” Afridi told a Pakistani news channel.

“The only answer we can give is with our performance. We will try to give 110 per cent in this big match.

“Everyone knows how big a match this is and the pressures that come with it. But we will just do our best whatever the result. After the match we just want to be content in our hearts we gave our best.”

This is what rediff says - http://www.rediff.com/cricket/report/world-cup-2011-indians-dont-have-large-clean-hearts-afridi/20110404.htm

Pakistan cricket captain Shahid Afridi Images ] has stirred controversy again by saying that he did not find any of the Indian cricketers having large or clean hearts.

Speaking days after losing to India Images ] in the World Cup semi-final in Mohali, Afridi said: “In my opinion, if I have to tell the truth, they (Indians) will never have hearts like Muslims and Pakistanis.”

“I don’t think they have the large and clean hearts that Allah has given us,” he added.

Afridi, who was participating in a talk show on Samaa news channel, said: “It is a very difficult thing for us to live with them (Indians) or to have long-term relationship with them. Nothing will come out of talks. See how many times in the past 60 years we have had friendship and then how many times things have gone bad.”

I wonder if Afridi meant it or just media pressure. But not good for the future of cricket between two countries. Media is bad everywhere and indian media is particularly worse but the lady in this video too is just too much. Putting words in afridi’s mouth.

Re: Shahid Afridi's interview to dawn creating furore in India

Probably planning to join politics and run for office after his team's debacle in the semis. This a a big turn around from Afridi after the right noises that he made initially which made him stand out as a graceful loser. This is more like the Afridi we (Indians) have known over the years.

And now this in dawn -

Afridi says anti-India comments ‘out of context’

NEW DELHI: Pakistan captain Shahid Afridi said on Tuesday his derogatory remarks about Indians and the Indian media had been taken out of context as he sought to counter anger over the comments.

The World Cup skipper had praised Pakistan’s media for being “100 times better” than India’s in a Pakistani TV show aired on Sunday, and said that Indians did not have “big and clean hearts” like Pakistani Muslims.

The comments shocked fans in India, who had praised his efforts during the World Cup to promote harmony between two estranged neighbours whose diplomatic relations are fraught with tension.

Pakistan lost to India in the competition’s semi-final in a much-hyped game that was attended by the leaders of both countries, in an event hailed as “cricket diplomacy”. India then beat Sri Lanka in Saturday’s final.

“I have enjoyed my cricket in India and I love Indian people,” Afridi told India’s NDTV channel in an interview aired on Tuesday.

“Don’t take my comments negatively. I have always got a lot of love and affection from Indian fans.

“And I request the media to play a more positive role and not waste time on such trivial issues.

“The media makes a big deal of small issues. It is shameful. I have always done my bit to improve Indo-Pak ties but sometimes you say something and it is interpreted the other way.

“I have been quoted out of context.”

In his TV comments on Sunday, which were aired at length and uninterrupted by Pakistani private channel Samaa, Afridi had said the approach of the Indian media was “very negative”.

“I believe their role has also been very dirty especially in terms of worsening ties between our two countries,” he said.

Re: Shahid Afridi's interview to dawn creating furore in India

In the original video interview and the Dawn article, there's no association with the term "Muslims" ... furthermore, he's simply talking about the "Indian cricket team" ... not "Indians". Also, I don't see where he said anything about the future of relations in the two countries. He's only mentioning the negative influence of Indian media. Perhaps, he could have qualified his statements more by referring to a subset of Indian media. We've all talked about the day and night difference between Indian media channels such as Zee that dwell on negative sensationalism versus outlets like NDTV that are more constructive in their coverage. In light of this, what Afridi is saying isn't unfounded... but as a captain, he shouldn't let these things affect him much and learn to ignore the negativities.

Re: Shahid Afridi's interview to dawn creating furore in India

Unfortunate comments by Afridi. Why let the 3-4 garbage TRP-hungry indian channels win by creating more of this media drama?

I never had much respect for Afridi anyway since all the pitch dancing and ball eating..and then some more ball eating. But he definitely had shown more maturity in his captaincy, bowling and media handling during the WC. I guess there was a threshold of how much media (indian or pakistani) he could take before he slips up.

Re: Shahid Afridi's interview to dawn creating furore in India

I agree with most except that it was NOT cool of him to say that (indians dont have big hearts as us muslims and pakistanis) even about the indian team. Both teams seemed to get along well on the field... there was no drama or excessive sledging or controversies.. leave it at that.. does he expect that he can make such comments about the indian team in the sensationalist media and it will not create drama?

Re: Shahid Afridi's interview to dawn creating furore in India

I have heard his interview on few different sources and he did talk about relations between the two countries -

Re: Shahid Afridi's interview to dawn creating furore in India

And this is what Aamir Sohail had to saw about Afridi

Former Pakistan skipper Aamir Sohail today slammed current captain Shahid Afridi for his comments that Indians are "not as large-hearted as Pakistanis", saying that the statement was "immaturish and untimely".

Afridi had said after reaching home following Pakistan's semifinal exit from the World Cup that it would be very difficult for Pakistanis to live with Indians or to have long-term relationship with them.

Sohail said Afridi should not have made these remarks just after the goodwill generated in the aftermatch of the India-Pakistan semifinal clash at Mohali and he should respect each individual.

"I think Afridi should not have made such comments. You got to respect every individual. His statement is kind of immaturish and at the same time untimely," Sohail said.

Afridi had also criticised Indian media for its "negative approach" but Sohail said media has a certain role to play.

"Look, media has a certain role to play. Media highlights the different aspects of an issue. For me, media is like a pain in body. You have to deal with media and find solutions in the relationship with it just like we consult doctors," he told 'Times Now'.

Re: Shahid Afridi's interview to dawn creating furore in India

Lots of conflicting remarks by Afridi.

Immediately after returning to Pakistan, in his video interview said "why are we so much against india....etc etc."
Then said, that "Indians in general are not as large hearted as Pakistanis and Muslims and it is very difficult for us to live with them or have a relationship with them."
And now saying his remarks have been take out of context!!

This is not the Afridi we saw in the world cup who was quite calm and mature! What is going on Mr. Afridi? You sound like you are having some kind of nervous breakdown.

Re: Shahid Afridi's interview to dawn creating furore in India

true say peachy.. way too many contradictory comments.. not sure which ones are his true views and which ones are just a show for the public infront of him at that given point..

Re: Shahid Afridi's interview to dawn creating furore in India

Thats just putting ur words in his mouth..... Yes he did talk about negativity if indian Media but never did he mention Indian people or team being negative and guess who is comming up with all those negative conclusions.... Indian MEDIA.

Re: Shahid Afridi's interview to dawn creating furore in India

No one is jumping to conclusions here. This is an exact quote from him (translated from Urdu to English).

Re: Shahid Afridi’s interview to dawn creating furore in India

Indian media needs to get a life. Surprisingly even after the WC win they have so much time on their hand to fabricate such stories.
