Pakistan’s Afridi slams Indian media

ISLAMABAD — Pakistan captain Shahid Afridi, whose team lost to India in the cricket World Cup, has delivered an astonishing tirade against Indian media for worsening political ties between the two great rivals.

In a Pakistani TV show aired Sunday by private channel Samaa, a bitter Afridi was repeatedly applauded by the studio audience and praised Pakistan’s media for being “a hundred times better”.

“As far as Indian media is concerned, their approach is very negative. I believe their role has also been very dirty especially in terms of worsening ties between our two countries,” he said.

“If I have to tell the truth, Indians cannot have the kind of hearts that Pakistani Muslims have. They cannot have the big and clean hearts that Allah has given to Pakistanis.”

His remarks cut across praise from the United States for so-called cricket diplomacy between India and Pakistan, whose leaders met for the semi-final that Afridi’s side lost by a mere 29 runs.

Indian Prime Minister Manmohan Singh invited Pakistani counterpart Yousuf Raza Gilani to watch the World Cup match between the two nations last Wednesday – the first time a top Pakistani leader visited since 2001.

Relations between the nuclear powers seriously deteriorated after the 2008 Mumbai attacks killed 166 people, which New Delhi blamed on Pakistan-based Islamist extremists.

But while analysts said the cricket had given the nuclear-armed rivals a fresh impetus to continue a sustained dialogue, Afridi seemed less optimistic.

“It is very difficult for us to live with them or have a long-term relationship with them,” he said. “You can see how many times we have had friendship in 60 years and how many times relations got strained.”
India and Pakistan have fought three wars since the subcontinent was partitioned in 1947. In India, on the eve of the semi-final, Afridi had called himself an “ambassador for Pakistan, so I should know what to say.”
“I think it’s a great sign for both countries and sports, especially cricket always brings these two countries together,” he added.

Trued - our media (especially the Hindi language channels) does go overboard sometimes to sensationalize things. However, Pakistani media also does the same.

Damn right about us not being able to have long term relationship. But someone should remind Afridi that its Pakistanis who came into India and carried out 26/11, carried out the parliament attacks, carried out the Kargil inflitration etc. and not the other way round.

So what if some Biggoted Indian Media or a Sore Loser Cricket Celebrity have dim views… dont let it put the bright spark of hopes for peace out of your hearts. :slight_smile:

Celebrities always screw things for the common folks but they dont realise that without them they would not be Celebs… what a sorry state.

There is nothing racist about that quote. The comment is wrt the attitudes of the two countries. Pakistanies have been openhearted in conduct throughout the world cup while Indian media and the team has been ridiculously jingoistic. At best you can regard that statement as incorrect, but you lot dont want to stop there, and wish to malign a person’s character. India and Pakistan are not races.

The only times Pakistanies have been openhearted with India is when they come to Bangalore or New Delhi for cardiac surgery.

I cannot believe you'd even try to obfuscate this open and shut case of afridi's true deceitful and hateful nature coming out in public.

How has the indian team been ridiculously jingiostic???? for 2-3 days before the SF the indian players were not talking sht in the indian team.. the pakistani players were.

3-4 channels in the indian media are completely disgusting.. they make me cringe.. specially that "india tv" channel.. that one needs to be banned the govt..

you are either being incredibly delusional or simply dishonest. to achieve what you continue to pretend his comments were about, all one needed to say was "The Indian media was too jingoistic". i'm sure there is some appropriate urdu word for "jingoistic".

however, that is not what our friend said. in a response to a question not about the media but about the people, he said this: In my opinion, if I have to tell the truth, they (Indians) can never have hearts like Muslims and Pakistanis. I don't think they have the large and clean hearts that Allah has given us.

does that really sound to you like a comment synonymous with "indian media is too jingoistic"? i can think of a hundred synonymous sentences that relay the same sentiment - none of them include comments about clean muslim hearts and allah's gifts to muslims.

lol get real, dude. you need to apply higher standards when choosing your battles. you are the torchbearer of liberal and progressive thought in the pak affairs forum but are afridi's defense attorney in this context? answers like his as well as the response from that room full of young pakistanis should scare you.

So you disagree with it being a racist comment, but agree about the bigoted part ? I will take that.

I was quite impressed by the initial comments he had made after getting back to Pak, but it didnt take too long for him to revert back. And these kind of comments do tell a lot about a person's character, especially if he is a role model for young Pakistanis :(
