SC summons record of Punjab CM’s elections
*Staff Report *

ISLAMABAD: The Supreme Court (SC) directed the Election Commission (EC) on Wednesday to submit by February 18 the record of Punjab Chief Minister Shahbaz Sharif’s participation in elections from various constituencies.

A three-member bench comprising Justice Javed Iqbal, Justice Muhammad Sair Ali and Justice Tariq Parvez also directed the Punjab chief minister to file a concise statement with the court before the next hearing of a petition challenging his electoral eligibility. The court directed Khawaja Harris, representing Shahbaz in the case, to file a comprehensive reply to the petition, and summoned the attorney general to the next hearing to assist the bench.

Justice Javed Iqbal observed that the court would examine the case “in depth” before making a decision. “The case would be decided in line with the law and the constitution,” he said.

The petitioner, Shahid Orakzai, has claimed that Shahbaz is not entitled to hold the office of chief minister because he vacated the PP-10 seat and resigned from the PP-48 seat after his election as the chief executive of the province. He has said in the petition that Shahbaz could not be the chief minister of the province without any seat in the assembly
