Re: Shah Mehmood Qureishi resigns
Mishandling pushed MPAs into PPP forward bloc
LAHORE, Nov 13: Stoppage of federal funds, a cold shoulder by prime minister and embracing of a turncoat by Yousuf Raza Gilani and his son were the major factors which pushed at least two Pakistan People’s Party MPAs into the emerging ‘forward bloc’ in the party likely to be led by former foreign minister and renegade leader Shah Mehmood Qureshi who plans unfolding his strategy on November 27.
According to the annoyed PPP MPAs — Malik Muhammad Abbas Raan (PP-201 Multan VIII) and Dr Akhtar Malik (PP-202 Multan IX) — they along with some other MPAs had been getting federal grants on the orders of President Asif Ali Zardari for development activities in their respective constituencies after the PML-N’s Punjab government denied them provincial funds.
However, they say that PM Gilani got these grants stopped after he developed ‘misunderstanding’ that they were backing Mr Qureshi since he resigned as foreign minister and became vocal against party high-ups.
They say though they tried hard to meet with the premier many a times in order to allay the misconception he was holding and to convey their reservations regarding acceptance of a ‘turncoat’ back into the party, they were not even granted the right to be heard.
“As we were already depressed because of stoppage of development funds and PM’s wrong perception about our links with Shah Mahmood Qureshi, we (after the curtness shown by Mr Gilani) finally decided to side with the former foreign minister,” Malik Abbas Raan told Dawn on Sunday.
Claiming backing of some 10 to 15 members of the Punjab Assembly, Raan said the group would announce its future course of action under the leadership of Mr Qureshi who would be revealing his plans at a rally on November 27.
When asked what would be the course of the ‘forward bloc’, he said quoting Mr Qureshi the group had three options. “According to Shah Mahmood Qureshi, he was working closely on three options — (1) siding with PML-N, (2) going along Pakistan Tehreek-i-Insaaf (both inviting him to their folds), (3) continuing politics independently”.
Mr Raan, however, made it clear he would vote for the PPP candidate in the next year’s Senate elections because he got elected to the Punjab Assembly on the PPP ticket in 2008 general elections.
Another PPP MPA and an active member of the emerging ‘forward bloc’, Dr Akhtar Malik, also listed the same reason that compelled him to side with Mr Qureshi.
“First the PM stopped federal funding last year and then he and his son accepted a turncoat MPA, Rai Mansab, back into the party folds. This man (Rai) won the 2002 general elections on PPP ticket. Then he left the party and joined PML-Q and later defected to the PML-N. Recently, he again joined the PPP and there were reports that PM Gilani and his son Abdul Qadir Gilani (an MPA from Rahim Yar Khan) were announcing him party candidate in the next general elections,” he said, adding, “such attitude of the PM and his son is really embarrassing for us”. He said he had also tried many times to meet the PM but failed.
Malik alleged that the PM Gilani had given a number of jobs in various ‘important’ federal government departments such as National Highways Authority, Law, NBP etc to those people who had been working against the PPP. He further alleged the PM was also supporting some corrupt people and officials.
“Everyone knows what the PM and his son are doing. They are just promoting corruption by supporting corrupt people in the country,” he added.
He said that he and some other MPAs had conveyed messages to the PM that they should not be considered Mr Qureshi’s allies, but Mr Gilani even refused to lend them a sympathetic ear.
He expressed the hope that soon more parliamentarians and party leaders would join the ‘forward bloc’. When asked whether anyone from the party leadership contacted the rebel MPAs in order to resolve the issues, he said: “Yes we are in contact with the Presidency and will be meeting with Raja Riaz on Monday (today) and present our genuine demands.”
Shah Mahmood Qureshi, when contacted, said he would hold a rally on November 27 in which he would announce his future course of action. When asked about joining the PML-N or PTI or announcing a separate group, to include the PPP ‘forward bloc’, Mr Qureshi said: “Look! all options are open. As our consultation process is underway, we will announce our decision on November 27 and not before that”.
The PM’s son Abdul Qadir Gilani was not available for comments despite repeated calls made and text messages left on his cell phone by this reporter.
