& Its Tonighttttt!!! Happy Shab-e-barat everyone. =)

I am a litl confused. I know we have been celebrating shab e barat since childhood and still do ....but I am just curious, whats it called in Arabic? Shab is a persian word ..I think...

Any saying of the Prophet (saw) on shab e barat?

Would really appreciate if someone can add to my knowledge.

and Happy Shab-e-barat everyone also. =)

Check out the link given in post #24 above.

In Arabic, Its called *"Laylatul-bara'ah" *(The night of freedom from Fire)

Thanks Faisal and JazakAllah. Just realized it was a link.

I only wish the Hadis (plural) mentioned on that page had references also.

Well then this is confusing and frustrating. They can't come to a point and agree on it. One party says yes pray/fast and the other party says it's not a special night.

Who's right and who is wrong?

This is a difference of opinion of Scholars, in the past. Just like Shia and Sunni have their differences, Ahmadi’s and Sunnis have their difference, there are difference of opinions within Sunnism too.

Its natural because this was a given. The Prophet pbuh prayed for there to be NO differences amongst his ummah, and this dua of his was rejected by Allah swt.

Differences always occured since the demise of the Prophet pbuh and its natural.

Follow the maslak you’re associated with and you will be fine. If you’re a hanafi, You would do as it says in post 24. If you’re a ahle-hadeeth, you do as it says on Islamqa.

Either way, if you do something, or dont do something on this night, Allah is the ultimate judge and you will be rewarded with the intention you have.

Majority of the scholars of today and the past, and the majority of the ummah (following the fiqh of the 4 imams) do recognize the 15th of Shaban. The biggest scholars of our time, do recognize it.

The link in post 24, is by Mufti Thaqi Uthmani, one of the GREATEST scholars to walk this earth. His father wrote Ma’ariful Quran, which is the commentary of the Quran accepted and taught by ARAB countries, and uloom institutions ALL over the world. He is recognized in Islamic Finance, and is was known for his service as a Judge in Pakistan.

More on them here:

These people are gems which Pakistan has produced. May Allah be pleased with them.

Re: Shabe Barat

Crescent Thanks and I agree, especially with the statement that Allah is the ultimate judge and will reward us based on the intention.

To be honest, I don't know which maslak I belong to. I remember in Pakistan they had masjids for separate groups and some of the people would advise "don't go to that masjid, that one belongs to flaan group, go to this one instead" but I ever cared. I went to whatever was closer to pray.

My main belief is that there is only one God (Allah) and that the Prophet Mohammad (PBUH) is his messenger. Other than that, I follow what every Muslim agrees on: The five pillars and other general common sense good deeds etc. etc. etc.

As for praying on these special nights, I don't remember waking up all night praying even when I was in Pakistan. This is something that I have not been doing. I didn't have a reason NOT to do this in the past, but ever since I learned what bidah is, I have stopped practicing those actions that are not the "norms" (i.e. anything other than 5 prayers, janaza, and eid etc.). My reason is that I don't want to invent anything that is not part of Islam that everyone agrees upon. That's is now my reason not to do many of the things that Pakistani/Indian muslims do out of love but they may end up upsetting the Almighty.

As you said, it all comes down to the intention and everyone agrees on that the actions are rewarded based on the intentions. Allah knows the best.

Re: Shabe Barat

salam shikra, here is a definition of Bidah..

as he says, an act that we consider wajib, we do not consider shab-e-raat compulsory. also, we have much evidence regarding this night.

as for following a madhab please have a read here: Understanding the Four Madhhabs (with footnotes)

remember the old saying “Difference of opinion is a mercy” so we cannot just say one is right and one is wrong. http://www.paklinks.com/gs/religion-scripture/287699-etiquette-diference-opinion.html

Re: Shabe Barat

Wa Alaikum US-Salam.

Thanks Cricketplaya :) I am watching the videos now.

Re: Shabe Barat

I mentioned it before too, It doesn't matter if you worship on this night or not, its a difference of opinion right.

But as long as a muslim is doing what is obligatory and what he should be doing as a muslim (Namaaz, Roza, Zakat, Kindness towards humanity etc etc), then its all fine and dandy, and inshallah Allah swt will reward all of us with jannatul firdous.

Re: Shabe Barat

interesting things people have put down here :k: Thank you
