Shabbir faces one year ICC ban, says Salim Altaf

Staff Report

LAHORE: Pakistan fast bowler Shabbir Ahmad is likely to banned for one year by the International Cricket Council (ICC) for a suspect bowling action. The verdict on the 29-year-old bowler will be announced on December 9, Salim Altaf, Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) director cricket operation, told Daily Times here on Tuesday.

He said the ICC had sent the videotapes of Shabbir’s bowling action, taken on the third day of the Multan Test, to Professor Bruce Elliot, a biomechanical expert at the Western Australian University in Perth, for his view. “The ICC has asked Elliot to compare Shabbir’s bowling action in the current video tapes with those which were prepared when he had worked with Shabbir in October last,” Salim added.

“If it is found that Shabbir has gone way past the 15 degrees tolerance level, allowed by the ICC to bowlers to extend their elbows, during the Multan Test than he stands suspended for one year because he has been reported twice this year for his action,” Salim said.

He said if Shabbir was banned from international cricket then he would be allowed to take part in the domestic cricket so that he could correct his action. Lanky Shabbir, who plays for WAPDA in Pakistan’s domestic circuit, has taken 51 Test wickets. After Multan, Shabbir has been reported for the fourth time in his career
