Shabbir Ahmed, the Pakistan fast bowler, is hoping to return to action in the next two weeks after being treated for a cartilage injury. Ahmed, 28, was sent to South Africa for the treatment, and is optimistic about being fit in time for Pakistan’s Test series against Sri Lanka, which starts at Faisalabad on October 20.
“The Pakistan board sent me to Cape Town for treatment and a specialist there did immediate surgery on my right knee,” Ahmed told the BBC. “He now says I can recover in two weeks’ time. I am very hopeful of making a comeback against Sri Lanka.”
However Ahmed, who has been reported three times for bowling with a suspect action, will miss the current triangular one-day series featuring Pakistan, Sri Lanka and Zimbabwe.
having considered our back up bowlers {rao naved and co'} i'd say the sooner gul and shabbir come back into the line up the better chances' there are of not seeing naved crying with figures of 2/82 again against a aisde who have had their test status taken away from them.
we defnietly need shabbir... after watchign our backup bowling.. i can say shabbir is head and shoulders abover any of those guys... i heard umar gul could be on the shelf for a long time though, his injury is similar to shane bonds

I do hv some reservations against rana, but there's nothing wrong with rao. everyone needs time. he does move the ball around a bit n has potential. remember shabbir n gul SUCKED BIGTIME after the WC. but they were persisted with n thus were able to establish themselves. rao is like shabbir in some ways, as was also mentioned by manjrekar. lets hope he can establish himself. btw his bowling was reasonable today. shd get a run in the entire tournament an also in the test series to see if he is gd enough to go to Australia.
