What is the significance of shab-e-baraat, historically? I know the Miraj one is about where the Prophet goes up to the heavens.

Why do we read nafals for these two nights? Was this something the Prophet asked us to do, or the Quran, or is it something we just do as Pakistanis?
PCG, people have differed on this issue. They all agree that the narrations on this issue are weak, however some consider them strong enough to use them and suggest that it is an important night and prayer should be established. Others have decided that since the evidence is weak and there is no strong evidence to support it, hence the night should have no religious significance.
I understand that the second view makes more sense, since matters of worship should not be decided on weak narrations.
But one should keep in mind that the month of shaban is a month when the Prophet used to fast/pray a lot more.

after the friday prayer, leaflets were distributed in the mosque which clearly mentioned that there is no eral evidene of any special significance or special prayer for these nigths....
the month of shaabaan in itself is special according to saheeh hadith that the prophet fasted most during this month (after ramadhan)....
but the night of mi-shaabaan has only stories attached to it and no real hadith confirms any of the myths....
okay so what are these stories?
There are no 'stories'. It is supposedly said that a lot of people are forgiven during this night. As far as I know the only night for worship is the night of Qadr as the Quran in itself states that its better than a 1000 months. Allah knows best.
actually,, Shab-Barat,, is the night on which the luck and fate of all the universe is written for the next whole year....
thats why ppl say that pray at nite and ask ALLAH for mercy and forgivenes...
i live in Saudi Arabia,,, and no body knew it was Shab-Barat,, till todays morning,, i have only seen it happen in Pakistant hat special night prayers arragend and ppl gather and say nafaals and recite Quran...

Brother, I have calendar from Masjid and a Hadith is mentioned which says: The Prophet (peace be upon him) said, when the middle night (the night before 15th) of Shaban arrives, observe Qiyam-ul-lail (Ibadah at night) and fast on the day (15th of Shaban). - Ibne Majah

i kept the 15th shaban rooza (shab-e-raat) and it was a 12 and half hour rooza. it went well didn't feel any hunger during the day but my mouth felt dry @ times.
who else kept the rooza (fast) on dis paak day
