Has anybody used Seyla rice? I use basmati rice only but I have been hearing a lot about Seyla rice in a lot recipes especially on desi cooking shows. Some people use Seyla rice in biryani too.
First of all is it call Jasmine rice? Secondly which taste better?
Saila means easy cook rice - further processed. They can be basmati, Italian or American.
So basically there is no difference between basmati and saila rice. Saila or easy cook basamti rice are good for biryani and zarda. Afghans and pakhtoons mostly cook saila rice (easy cook basmati rice).

Saila is basically used for Zardas & Aghani food. In cooking shows they use Saila rice because you can hardly go wrong with them while cooking them. Where as Basmati if not payed attention to can get soft quickly while boiling.
Where I live most women swear by Saila rice.
I used saila rice once for Pulao & did not like the taste. It was more like I could taste the rice itself rather than the Pulao. With Basmati, the rice texture/taste is not overpowering the dish itself.
If you soak saila basmati rice for 5 hours, they turn out very good and they become very long and behave like normal basmati but do not break or become mushy.
seyla rice is merely used for cooking pulao(all kinds of).....while basmati is good for biryani...
from my childhood i have seen my nani dadi khalas ami cooking pulao with seyla rice....its yummm
