BTW, I think people usually do not stay away from sex because their religion says so. They do it only due to the established social norms.

It is in human nature to feel accepted by society. If society makes sex a stigma then people would refrain from it in order to win society's acceptance.
For example, in the West the society has accepted open sex before marriage. Everyone does it without being ostracized by others. But their society has also put bars on sex after marriage. So people usually stay away from sex after marriage in order to be accepted as regular "good guys" by the society.
So it is the society making people follow the norms.
However, religion plays its role because it is a driving factor in creating society's norms.

I do not know about other religions but I know that Islam does not suppress or repress sex. It just channels it in direct and appropriate direction.

Islam doesn't suppress sex, if you're married. The problem is that people used to be married at 13 and 14, but nowadays they wait until their twenties. It's a lot harder to control yourself in our day and age, and can be considered suppression, to some extent. Make of that what you will.
