I know there are certain words in Urdu to denote love. I’m wondering if there are any words in urdu to denote sex. And I’m not talking about slang, but genuine words.
Anyone know of any? Or is sex and love defined under one word in Urdu?
The reason I ask is because the western concepts of love and sex, are very different (at least in my opinion) to easter concepts of the same. The same can be said about Islamic definitions of love. I’m wondering if these differences transcend into language as well as practice.
Hmmm..Achtung bhai..well..of course there are so many words in urdu for love, even though just a couple come to mind right now....piyaar, muhabbat of course. But about sex, i would have to know a bit more about ur question before i can correctly answer it. I dont want to come off looking silly u know. One translation for sex is 'jinss', but i dont think thats what you are asking for, cause 'jinss' actually stands for 'gender' in english. However, do elaborate on ur question.
Actually, it is interesting that chinese characters for 'sex' can be used for 'collaboration' or 'some kind of partnership'. In urdu, they talk of 'jismani tallukat' if i am right, for sexual relation. But for 'sex' prescisely i donno.
About western and eastern concepts of love and sex, well.. Yeats/Shakespere are as romantic as any Urdu poet. Second world war, in some sense changed the concepts in Europe. No place in east faced that kind of turmoil, exceptr maybe vietnam. I don't know how this whole thng changed Vietnam.

I think the word is 'Kaam' in Hindi and Punjabi. I am not sure if it is same in Urdu.
Its interesting that we have so many alternative words for Love but almost none about Sex. Another indication that we are so humg up about it . How can you be open and talkative about something that you don't have a name for :)

I’m talking about sex – not gender (i.e. male, female), but a word for sex. Words for love don’t count. It almost seems as though love and sex have been divorced from one another in the western world, and this is evident in language. While in eastern societies, sex is just one aspect of love, but the two are so closely intertwined that they have not been separated. Sex has not been reduced to the physical, almost scientific, definition of the word in western societies. Rather its just one of the components of love. In the eastern world, it seems almost as though, to have sex without love is incapable of being explained in language. Because it doesn’t make sense perhaps?
I started the topic, actually after reading both Mr. Fraudia’s topic on language and Sabah’s topic on the lack of people visiting this forum. I thought I’d write something about sex to attract people, since sex sells. And this seemed like an interesting enough topic.
sex without love has been in easter world also. Women on the farms have been exploited by landlords. there have been prostitutes, geishas of japan, kothas and its variations all over eastern world. In fact, kothas and women in it, their looks, dances and drinks served there have been object of poetry throughout medieveal ages. Men have married women they do not love due to dowry (or green card). child marriages were common. Widows were/are exploited. Often caste and religion considerations have stopped people from marrying their love. Love has always been a turbulent thing in the land of heer-ranza and probably sex without love is more comon in asian world than in west.
The word for sex in sanskrit is 'sambhog' (sam- equal, bhog- enjoyment) often used in other languages. This is word for act of 'sex' (does not specify if it is without love or with love). I am sure Urdu being a rich language has a word for it.
You seem to have a very romantic concept of eastern world, which is far from true.
